Over the last month, Vogue Business asked more than 200 brands to send information about materials used in their latest collections, and nearly two dozen of the biggest houses to send sourcing information for the materials they used. Very few of them responded. Rachel Cernansky wanted to understand: for all the initiatives that brands say they’re adopting to improve their raw material sourcing, has any of it translated yet to what we see on the market or on the runway? Seemingly, the answer is either no, or we don't know. Given the industry's track record of setting lofty goals but facing no accountability when it comes to meeting them, combined with the increasing severity of the climate, water and biodiversity crises, that is an ominous sign for the speed and direction of progress. I loved talking to Rachel about this, sharing my views on why we need to see evidence of greater progress through the pinnacle of the fashion week showcase. I’m not too worried because on the upside, the EU’s Cirpass Digital Product Passport legislation is going to sort the “wheat from the chaff” however luckily it’s not as difficult as most brands think. Atm it is taking a while even for academics and sustainability heads to understand how true #circularity can work for this very complex industry, and I’m so grateful for the tech, blockchain and “waste” experts who do see the interconnected structure from the get-go by using #rfidtechnology that stays with the product, picks up new data throughout the lifecycle, is able to be first connected to confidential Supply Chain Management then open source for the “R” resource recovery sector to access, even capture the holy grail of data which is longevity to report in durability. There are so many positives coming to mitigate emissions and pollution but first step is governments to make it mandatory because as this article attests, the industry will realistically never do it voluntarily. There’s too much money in linear and too few understanding that there’s more profits with adjustments to circularity ♻️ Circlolink. 🌟 Last night was a remarkable evening at Mother Design, where I had the privilege of attending a captivating event hosted by Blue Earth, focussing on The Future of Fashion. 🌍✨ Amidst the discussions on innovation and the need for greater government intervention, it was inspiring to witness the strides being made by leaders in the fashion industry. 💡 #France , for instance, stands out as a beacon of progress with its #agec law, mandating environmental labels on fashion products to promote transparency in manufacturing. 🇫🇷👗 However, amidst the promising initiatives, it's clear that there's still much work to be done, especially in the face of competing interests between responsibility and profitability. 💼💚 🚀 The panel discussion featuring industry experts like Simon Platts from ASOS.com, stylist MARY FELLOWES, and Nick Giles, author of the Fixing Fashion report, shed light on the challenges and opportunities ahead. 🎤💬 But, what truly resonated with me was the emphasis on consumer empowerment. 👑🌱 As consumers, our choices have the power to drive significant change in the industry. 🛍️✨ Demanding transparency in supply chains and advocating for sustainable practices can create a ripple effect that transforms the entire fashion landscape. 🔄💚 🌟 Among the highlights were the insightful presentations by Emily Axten from XEROS, Genia Mineeva from BEEN London, and Jen Wagner from LAYBL, showcasing innovative solutions paving the way for a more sustainable future. 🌿💼 The event left me feeling inspired and hopeful, knowing that together, we have the ability to shape a fashion industry that is not only stylish but also responsible and ethical. 💪👗 Let's continue to push the boundaries and champion positive change in the world of fashion! 🌍✨ #FutureOfFashion #Sustainability #ConsumerEmpowerment

Vogue Business took on itself an interesting task: It "asked 231 brands — every label that showed on the official calendar in New York (plus Coach), London, Milan and Paris — to share the main #materials used in the collections they showed this season, and the source or certification partner they worked with if any materials were sourced in a specific way — recycled, organic, regenerative, etc — as well as whether it was used for select garments or collection-wide." Only 19 brands responded, most of them independent designers. Are you surprised? Well, you shouldn't be. This is another example of what I describe as sustainability-as-usual (https://lnkd.in/d72u36ac). The reality is very simple: as long as fashion companies (and companies in general) aren't required to change how they do business, they will continue to do so slowly and incrementally. We shouldn't be surprised then if they have very little incentive to report about it. Let's not forget the big four #fashion weeks (New York, London, Paris, and Milan) share responsibility for this situation. If any of them had the courage to set clear sustainability requirements, as Copenhagen Fashion Week has already done (which extend beyond materials - https://lnkd.in/d83VGFHc), then it's more likely that fashion brands would take sustainability more seriously. Challenge the Fabric, Milan 2024. Historical industry statistics don't lie: between 2000 and 2014 alone, clothing production doubled, and consumers began buying 60 percent more clothes and wearing them for half as long as before. In the world today, more than 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced per year for a global population of 8 billion people. Is there a solution to this reality? Appeal to a change in habits, but also the use of new inputs and fabrics of forest origin that consume a third of the energy and 60 times less water when compared to a synthetic fiber or cotton. This was one of the topics addressed at the Milan conference “Challenge the Fabric 2024”, which focused on sustainability, traceability and innovation in materials in the fashion industry and challenged designers to create sustainable looks to promote a shift towards bio-based and recycled materials. We had the opportunity to share Arauco’s sustainability practices in this challenging times and some trends that we see are going to happen in the future. To show support for both the fashion industry and the environment, Governor Kathy Hochul included a US $5 million investment for hemp and biobased product in the budget for the New York fashion industry, during New York Fashion Week. Governor Hochul made this investment in order to celebrate New York’s fashion industry and its role in driving the State economy, but also with the aim of helping to increase the production of fibre, which will then be used in apparel and design. Investing into the production of fibre truly highlights Hochul’s support, as this kind of material is an excellent sustainable and alternative material for the fashion industry to use, whilst also benefitting the environment.
