People Co Con affords the hundreds of us at The People Concern the rare opportunity to come together and learn what keeps the heart of our organization beating. After 5 long years, the return of People Co Con heralds the chance for us to learn from each other in order to better care for ourselves and for our program participants.
Thank you to everyone who attended and made the event unforgettable. We can't wait to reunite from across LA County and see just how much of a difference we can make in the lives of our unhoused neighbors.
🎉 Grateful to everyone who contributed at the IxDA Atlanta Discussion Group meetup on Tuesday! We explored the significance of workshops in UX design, highlighting their value in several scenarios:
Tackling Complexity: When challenges escalate in complexity, having a subject matter expert onboard is invaluable, enabling the team to navigate intricate issues effectively.
Embracing Diverse Perspectives: Diverse viewpoints from team members and users fosters richer insights and innovative solutions.
Securing Stakeholder Buy-in: UX workshops serve as catalysts for securing stakeholder buy-in, pivotal for propelling projects forward.
Fostering Creativity: UX workshops ignite creativity, sparking novel approaches and out-of-the-box thinking.
Building Strong Teams: Beyond project outcomes, UX workshops double up as tools for team building, forging stronger bonds and collaborative spirit amongst team members.
How do you use workshops to improve your design process?

Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. ET/ 10 a.m. PT: Join us for a webinar about Celebrate Trails Day—our annual spring celebration of America’s trails—and ways to get involved in this year's celebration as a partner!
Celebrate Trails Day is more than a day outside. It’s an opportunity to grow awareness and appreciation for all the ways that trails make a difference for people, places and the planet every day, so we can build more support to create, connect and maintain trails in every neighborhood in America.
This year, the celebration falls on Saturday, April 27—and we hope you will team up with us to inspire people nationwide to celebrate their local trails. During the webinar, our team will provide an overview of Celebrate Trails Day; share ways to engage; go over the tools and materials we’ll provide to help you plan, promote and participate in the celebration; and answer any of your questions.

Today was one of those days where you feel uber favored by Divinity and in perfect alignment with your purpose. So many close calls and moments when I thought the day could fall apart. But it just kept getting better.
Shoutout to my team. Shoutout to my new friends from Ebony & Louise’s important event.
I’m grateful to our hosts and all my co-panelists for all the things you taught us and all the ways you challenged me to sharpen my voice. I’m grateful for all of you who came to engage in some deep and radical conversation post-event.
I’m grateful to Maxim Thorne for your constructive feedback. I want those I engaged with today to know: I don’t seek to minimize the level of terror that the white structure has exacted on our communities every time we have built power. I have agitated about that for as long as I can remember.
But now, the only thing that excites me is immersing myself in the truth of our infinite collective power. The truth of our incredible capacity to overthrow systems of oppression with love, strategy and unrelenting precision.
I do not believe that they are more powerful than us. I can never believe that. They’ve only been able to back us into these corners because of our lack of unity and awareness of our power.
They know our power more than we do. And they fear it. Which is why they work so hard—with generations-long strategies—to suppress us.
But we have overcome. The very fact that we continue to lead culture just by existing should show us that WE are THEIR North Star.
Please, let us continue to have these conversations. Let us continue us continue to build bigger, dream wilder. We owe it to our Ancestors and to our descendants.
PS: please send me pics!

What makes a company truly great to work with? Is it just about skills and results—or could it be something more?
Let me challenge your thinking: Look for a team that genuinely enjoys working together, that knows how to work hard and have fun. At Blue Compass, we believe in that balance. Every year, we break into smaller teams to compete, collaborate, and just have fun together during our Blue Circle Games—an afternoon filled with food, drinks, and activities that test our problem-solving, teamwork, and even our competitive edge.
Last Friday’s event was no exception. I had the honor of inviting some friends and old colleagues to help out, and they all walked away with the same impression: our team is connected, collaborative, and truly enjoys one another’s company. It's something you can feel, whether it’s in a game or at work.
Great weather, great competition, great teamwork—and most of all, great relationships. When choosing a partner or vendor, don’t overlook the value of a team that loves working together. That’s what makes a company stand out.
What do you value most in a team you partner with?

What a topic to tackle: volunteer comfort and care . . . I'm still mulling over some of my takeaways from the conversation, including
🫂 - responsible comfort and care of our volunteers is about relationships and culture more than policy. Individuals have different needs; we need to entrench a culture of checking in, encouraging/respecting boundaries, asking for feedback, celebrating as a team.
🍶- even though, being intentional about the minimum standards for comfort, and caring for the physical, social, cultural and psychological wellness of the volunteer is a program responsibility and should be codified. If they're doing the work they need to have the tools to do it, and the resources to do it safely. Water and hats on hot days; checking in after an emotionally taxing responses. How does this look at your organization?
🤝 - volunteer comfort and care is embedded across the volunteer lifecycle. It starts with solid understanding of the scope of work and appropriate placement, continues as we provide training and enable the work, and is ever present in how we appreciate volunteers, how they engage with the work, etc, etc. Just like justice, equity, diversity and inclusion work, comfort and care isn't a project or initiative on the side, it's to be entrenched and cultural.
Thanks Alex and Kamak for the super conversation this morning!
