It is crucial to recognize that individuals learn differently and that these preferences can vary depending on the subject matter. In healthcare, addressing the unique needs of each learner is more important than ever. New graduates entering the field require more support than in the past due to the rapidly changing landscape and increasing acuity levels. A key aspect of effective education is taking the time to assess each learner's style and determining the best approach to reach them. Some learners may be self-starters, technologically adept, and quick to grasp new concepts, while others may struggle and risk becoming frustrated or feeling inadequate. Therefore, it is essential for educators to engage with learners early and provide ongoing coaching throughout the learning process. Creating a safe environment for questions is also imperative. This can involve one-on-one sessions or group learning where everyone is committed to not only their own success but also the success of the entire group.

In discussing adult learning, we often underplay the importance of emotions. The assumption tends to be that if an adult has picked up an area of learning, it must be because they are motivated to do so. However, that is not always the case. When it comes to participating in TPD programs, teachers are often under orders or other kinds of compulsion to attend those. How then is a trainer to generate that kind of emotional environment that leads to the kind of engagement, reflection and application that helps teachers convert their classrooms into better ones? What are the triggers that will enable emotional participation of adults? Some of the simplest ones are to put aside one's own agenda, especially in the beginning, and to simply listen to teachers by asking open-ended questions about what they do, issues that they face, which are related to the nature of the training ahead. Keeping one's inputs concrete, especially in the beginning, and going into the reasons behind them, that is to say, the theory, only after the concrete manifestations have been thoroughly experienced by teachers. At times, teachers ask critical questions, especially related to implementation. Taking those seriously and even stopping a session to discuss them is far more effective, because then the process is being customised to those actually present there. It's important for the trainer to realise that the workshop is actually for the participants and not for the trainer or his or her own agenda. It is this kind of authentic, trust-oriented interaction that leads to emotional participation of teachers.

Process and experiential learning in preparing healthcare professionals for complex work settings The belief in students actively participating in planning their learning is well established. Humanist approaches to education advocate that learners experience greater rewards when they take ownership of their learning needs. Learning is enriched when students work towards achieving personal satisfaction, and education involves personal, emotional, and intellectual challenges. Some authors consider robust self-evaluation more helpful than learning undertaken to attain externally imposed grades, often called process curricula. These ideas fit well with notions of learning to learn and learning from experience through problem-solving activities carried out in group formats. Enquiry-based learning (EBL) is closely related to problem-based learning; the approach involves a meaningful engagement with a problem or task. EBL requires learners to become active participants in curricular studies. EBL is fundamentally about collaboration, as learners work together to pool their collective knowledge and understanding and work together in cooperation. The approach is suited to the preparation of healthcare professionals of all specialities.
