📚 Happy #WorldBookDay 2024! Much more than a standalone event, World Book Day acts as a springboard to inspire a lifelong love of reading. Research tells us that #readingforpleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child's future success. To build on today’s momentum, take a look at the following ideas to promote reading across your school: ⭐ Advertise a Book: Ask children to advertise their book around school - hold a competition for the most persuasive advert! ⭐ Big Book Brunch: Hold a book-themed brunch party where each dish is inspired by a book. ⭐ Borrow a Book For a Friend: Challenge children to borrow a book that they think their friend would like. Ask the friend to review the book once they have read it - did they make a good choice? ⭐ Caught Reading: Catch pupils reading all around school and the local area. Take a photo and create an interactive display to encourage children to ‘get caught reading.’ ⭐ Door Jackets: Challenge each class to turn their classroom door into a jacket for their favourite or current read. Blind date with a book! We recently visited one of our favourite places... National Trust: Hinton Ampner. They happen to have a book fair on and after looking at many books and spending way too long in trying to decide which ones to buy, we went to go look around the house and grounds first and possibly come back to the books later. As we explored the site, we happened across a small stall with a basket of books wrapped in brown paper with clues to their author and story written on the front. And there in the top left-hand corner it read: 'BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK!' Well, we just couldn't resist. A few of them I guessed and decided to pop back in the basket. My Son chose this one and we all went away rather excited by what it might be. This reminds me a little about how some of my learners turn up to my sessions. Some want to read the blurb and the reviews and even the first chapter before they'll commit to being fully engaged. Whilst others rock-up just happy to be learning something and intrigued by the whole event. I am very conscious of this approach to attending workshops and try to ensure both types get the chance to explore the session in the way that’s right for them. For my ‘blurb readers’ I have welcome videos, virtual meet’n’greets, and agendas… for my ‘blind date with a book’ types, I allude to playful learning strategies and the possibilities of what’s to come. I’d be interested to here what others do to help engage different learners prior to a session. #curiouslighthouse #learninganddevelopment
