New research on the German health care system during the pandemic reveals that it provided more inpatient care to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations without worsening existing inequalities. Esra Eren Bayindir, Robert Messerle, Tom Stargardt, and Jonas Schreyögg from Universität Hamburg examined the relationship between socioeconomic factors (education and income) and mortality from any cause (including respiratory, emergency, cancer surgery, elective, and ambulatory care–sensitive care) and health care use. Using mortality rates from 2011–21 and hospitalizations from 2014–21, the authors found that education had a stronger impact on changes in admission rates than income. Accompaniment...a missing piece in medicine? Whether a 72-year-old man living with dementia or a 27-year-old woman suffering recurrent miscarriages, both patients are in need of support — of accompaniment in their journey. As part of our FACTS Teacher series, we highlight the diverse set of physicians and clinicians who contribute their time and expertise to help us educate the next generation of medical professionals via our FACTS elective. Our series continues with Dr. Angela Maupin Kristan, a family physician trained in Creighton and FEMM. Serving patients across the lifespan, from adolescent to geriatric patients, Dr. Kristan gently teaches us about the value of accompanying patients as a physician. Today, on Clinical Trials Day 2024, we honour the remarkable contributions of clinical trials in the fight against #Alzheimersdisease. Clinical trials are the backbone of medical advancements, providing the essential research needed to develop new treatments and therapies that can change lives. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK and USA volunteer to participate in clinical trials every year. Clinical trials are not just conducted to test medicine, they are also used to test and compare different medical treatments, products and equipment such as surgical tools, diagnostic machines, wound dressings and mental health therapies. Participating in a clinical trial has numerous benefits for volunteers, who are helping to develop new treatments and playing an active role in #research; importantly, volunteers are benefiting future generations, as well as taking control of their own health. Thank you to our #team at Re:Cognition Health, all of our amazing #volunteers, study partners, scientists and everyone who contributes to clinical trials; together we are making a positive difference to create a future without Alzheimer's. #ClinicalTrialsDay #CTD2024 #AlzheimersResearch #MedicalAdvancements #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalTrials #FightAlzheimers #ResearchMatters #PatientCare #FutureofMedicine

Drugmakers are taking steps to make sure clinical trials include participants from a variety of backgrounds—and they are steadily making progress, as evidenced by new studies of multiple sclerosis and sickle cell disease. Milliman health researchers Ellyn Russo and Chris Page unpack a history of distrust in medical research, the implications of failing to attract diverse study participants, and how simple strategies like rideshare vouchers, childcare, and check-in apps can help expand a study’s reach, so more patients have access to the latest treatments and medical research moves forward.
