In celebration of the artistic spirit, we at DailyArt are delighted to present a special feature on a remarkable female artist from the #FaroeIslands–Ruth Smith. Join us in an exploration of her life and learn about the masterpieces she crafted.
Our focus here is on unraveling the essence of #RuthSmith–her Faroese identity, her #womanhood, and the sheer fabulousness that defined her. All three tie into the leading questions: What did it mean for her to be Faroese? To be a woman? And, how does that reflect in her #art?
It's interesting to note how traditional depictions of historical and religious figures often reflect the cultural and racial biases of the artists who created them. Many master artists, often white European men, have shaped our visual history, which has led to a predominantly Eurocentric portrayal of significant figures like the Virgin Mary. This has whitewashed our history and distorted our understanding of these figures' true appearances.
While scrolling on Instagram, I found an image that re-portrays the Virgin Mother in a way that more accurately represents her likely ethnicity. This re-representation challenges the traditional depictions of the Virgin Mary and offers a more inclusive perspective, reminding us of the diversity that history holds.
It also reminds us to reprogram our minds and seek truth beyond what is spoon-fed to us. Finding the truth often requires a little more effort, but it’s essential for gaining a more accurate and inclusive perspective on history.

The Politics of Colourism and Its Proximity To Whiteness.
"This oil painting by Modesto Brocos titled 'The Redemption of Ham' depicts three generations of a Brazilian family. The eldest is the black woman to the left. The woman’s presumably mixed-race daughter holds her light-skinned child. Ham, the biblical progenitor of the Black race, is redeemed and one of his descendants has had the curse of Blackness lifted by successive whitening. The grandmother raises her hands in gratitude. The mother points to her as a cautionary tale. The white father observes the scene proudly and coolly. This painting was completed in 1895 during the heydey of scientific racism when it was widely accepted that “the Black race” was not only inferior but also moribund."
