One definition of fellowship is riding in the same boat with other fellows. I like this definition because it reinforces the important role community plays in fellowship. The people we’re surrounded by matter. This does not mean only hang out with people who are like you and agree with you. Rather, it means surround yourself with people who share your values and will help you grow as a person of faith and character. Who are the good people you're hanging out with? Let them know you value them. Acknowledging someone's importance is an excellent way to strengthen your relationship.

"Longing for community, I joined YCP Cincinnati and little did I know, this decision would change everything. When I was abruptly let go from my job, I felt lost and desperate... I immediately set up my YCP MentorCloud account to connect with a Catholic mentor. Within just a few days, I was able to meet with a professional who could coach me through everything I was feeling. I continued to meet with him weekly to update him on my progress. Having that validation and a listening ear was invaluable at a time where I felt so hurt.  Two weeks into my unemployment, we had an event in which the CEO of a very profitable company would be speaking. It was inspiring to hear how he so seamlessly blended his faith and work. After the talk, I exchanged a few words with him, mentioning that I had recently been let go. He was so kind and told me to send him my resume! He passed it along internally and sent it through to his network. Inspired by his faith and his love for Saint Joseph, I began a St. Joseph the Worker novena. Exactly a month after I was let go I received a job offer from the pharmaceutical company. There is no way I would have been connected to that opportunity if not through YCP.  My month of unemployment has made me realize that the human soul is oriented to work. Without work, we lose our sense of purpose. It is the main way we glorify God, and I am excited to be glorifying him through this next position. I am still learning how a 9 to 5 can be sanctifying, but I am excited to be moving forward with YCP. Bayo Akomolafe is such a generous being and precise thinker. What a joy to host for Climate Wisdom Fellowship to spur deep and rich thinking in the myself and the group. I really appreciate his reframing of leadership as not centering around "the individual". There is the concept in Buddhism of "interbeing" expressed in Thicht Naht Hahn's famous poem years ago "Call Me By My True Names" where he identifies as himself all these various people and beings all over the planet in different life situations. I feel like Bayo is approaching this idea of interbeing but relates it so intimately to the nonhuman such "furinture, texture, microbial interventions, social algorithms, theology" etc. It changes the way we think, it changes the idea of who we are. We are composed of so much more than this skin-encapuslated body. Let's stay available to the insights and questions that come from being open systems. I did a thing yesterday! I got to represent Essential Partners at an AmeriCorps Symposium! It was such an honor to be able to talk about bridging work in educational spaces and meet people who are doing some really thoughtful work! Here are some Qs and ideas I am sitting with after this experience: ✨ What will bridging work look like in 5 years? ✨ How do we bridge bridge-makers? ✨ Inviting people to come sit in the mess and discomfort is hard, requires trust in the process (without having experienced it) ✨ Educational spaces are a real impactful cornerstone and third space for communities ✨ Naming how the power, position, and stakes are different for different people feels crucial
