🎙️ Designing a Decentralized Metaverse: Cyril Forte’s Insights
In our recent episode, we delved with Cyril Forté into the intricacies of designing a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) for The Sandbox, a leading metaverse project.
His journey involved striking a delicate balance between extreme decentralization and overly centralized governance.
Cyril emphasized the challenges posed by both ends of the spectrum, highlighting fragmentation risks in extreme decentralization and stifled creativity in overly centralized models.
🔍 Key Takeaways:
- Cyril’s approach focused on fostering democratic participation while recognizing varying community engagement levels.
- Crafting a constitution that inspires active participation was crucial for the DAO’s success.
- Leveraging Sandbox’s brand and vision, Cyril ensured alignment between the -DAO’s objectives and broader project goals.

When you got the director for Sandbox, you got that and you started looking at designing this. Where did you start? You know, almost going through the design for the Dal. And then how, what's gonna be a vote? How much is democratic? How much is a council? The full sort of setting up the constitution. So it was a it was a spectrum, right? So I'm navigated between. Not so decentralized to fully decentralized OK, what's the pros and cons on being on the left? What's the pros and cons on being on the right? And what's the where's the happy medium So being fully decentralized, this could be the far West, but not in a good way like to my previous example where there's no common vision and people are. To a point, egoistical, egotistical at some point, right? We at if he if I start taking food off your your table, you're gonna be mad at me very quickly, right. So fundamentally, I would say people if you push them, they become egotistical, rightfully so, because that's our primal directly. We want to take care of us and our family before anything else. So how do we reconcile that with the common project? But if you are too centralized, then it's not really a doubt this against a body of people deciding. For the community without necessarily consulting them. So my challenge was always to navigate that space and be like, OK, can we design a system that is democratic, recognizing that people are more invested than other in the ecosystem? How do you reward that? How do you make sure these people get a voice? And how do you make sure that when you have a constitution, the constitution still makes sense and still inspire people to join you now and still give a clear vision of what you're doing so you can gather people and I think. It's it's, it's, it's difficult because you want to make sure you wanna make sure people show up. You wanna make sure people are interested by what you're doing. Like the worst that can happen to a Dow is nobody's showing show up, nobody votes because nobody cares about you don't nobody care about your proposal, nobody care about you doing. And I think at the sandbox where the chance to have a very strong brand and a very strong vision for what's the sandbox as a product is right. This metaverse where you can own your piece of land and you can build your own user, your own game and. Get rewarded for your own game and you own your creation. So there's a very strong proposal there. But what's the Dow can do for that community of people? What the Dow can do for the sandbox, taking that on board as well? That is, this is not coming from the void. This is the sandbox style. This is not a doubt. So what's the lineage between the two? And how the Dial can serve? The sandbox also dictated how I've shaped this whole thing up.
