High-end contemporary art market akin emperor-without- clothes According to the Arts/Collecting section of the FT Weekend (July13/14, 2024), one of the paintings shown was sold by a well-known auction house in NY City in May 2024 for US$46.5M. I bet my bottom-dollar that observers who are not tuned into news of the high-end contemporary art market would be confounded as to why said artwork can fetch such princely price. The reason is simply the emperor has no clothes. When the purveyors of so-called high-end contemporary art figured out long ago that one-percenters without taste for visual art can be fast-talked into paying an arm and leg for crap passed off as art, the mold for one of the biggest rackets was set. When suckers continue to pay millions for said crap, all those with vested interest know better than to tell the emperor he has no clothes. #HighEndContemporaryArtMarketAkinEmperorWithoutClothes

Working with Achilleas helping him prepare for his TEDx talk at TEDxEleftheriaSquare was probably one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of mine as a speaker curator. Why challenging? Because every time we’d meet up he’d have 10 new stories to tell while a TED Talk is about just 1 crystal clear idea. So my task was to crystallize it and select the best stories to foreground it Why rewarding? Because Achilleas introduced me to the workd of art from a totally new angle. Honestly, being an extremely practical person I’ve never actually been fascinated by art. So when asking him 1001 questions I was genuinely interested what’s inside the mind of an artist, how he comes up with their art ideas, what underlying idea his art conveys, why he does what he does and what’s his cause. I’m really greateful to Achilleas for the introduction to the work of art. Now I can’t just walk by a street art mural without wishing stop to find and read the artist’s cues.
