I would encourage individuals, governments and corporate Australia to attend this historic conference. Domestic violence is not only physical or coercive abuse, it's takes shape in other forms which employers need to be aware of to understand and support the safety of their employees. The conference will have interesting discussion celebrating 70 years of Elsie and the evolution of violence in the fast paced world. We can change the dialogue to end violence through our collective action.
Dear Friends The countdown to the Elsie Conference is well and truly on and I'm delighted with how the program has come together and the support we have received so far. We’ve had a few people enquire about whether they can attend and I’m hoping you can help me get the word out that the Elsie Conference is open to anyone interested in reducing domestic violence in our community. Our supporters and close friends across our many refuges and domestic violence support services will be a big contingent of the conference – as was designed, but I am keen to ensure that we have attendees from all industries and communities. We have to broaden the conversation and so I’m hoping you can help us by passing on the attached conference outline to your contacts – particularly those in corporate Australia or the public service. Businesses and workplaces large and small have to be engaged in order for us to tackle the DV epidemic – working hand-in-hand with family and crisis support services and the healthcare, justice and education systems. That is how we can get things done. If you haven’t checked elsieconference.com.au, then you must take a look at the phenomenal line-up of speakers we have across our conference program, including: • The Hon Quentin Bryce AD CVO – Former Governor General of Australia • Jess Hill – Walkley award-winning journalist and author specialising in coercive control and gendered violence • Julie Inman Grant – Australia's eSafety Commissioner • Micaela Cronin – Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner • Maha Krayem Abdo OAM – CEO, Muslim Women Australia • Christine Robinson – CEO, Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre • Delia Donovan – CEO, Domestic Violence NSW • Virginia Haussegger AM – Award-winning television journalist and gender equity advocate • Antoinette Braybrook AM – CEO, Djirra • Lauren Callaway – Assistant Commissioner of Family Violence Command, Victoria Police • Dr Hannah Tonkin – NSW Women's Safety Commissioner • Dr Mihajla Gavin – Senior Lecturer in employment relations and human resource management, UTS Business School • Professor Marie Segrave – ARC Future Fellow University of Melbourne • Rowena Puertallano – Chairperson, Aboriginal Family Legal Services • Annabelle Daniel OAM – CEO, Women’s Community Shelters There is still time to register if you haven't already secured a ticket to the conference and a place at our conference dinner. For corporate Australia, our ticket price – $700 +GST for two days including morning tea and lunch – is extremely good value. When we started talking about the Elsie Conference, I had hoped it would be a historic gathering that would enable us to look back on the last 50 years of refuge work and put our collective brains together to contemplate solutions for the future. With your support – I know my hopes will become a reality in March. Yours in sisterhood Anne

Rather than address structural violence, Canadian bioethicists say we should allow those disadvantaged and adversely impacted by structural violence to be killed. After George Floyd the world learned about American racism and structural violence related deaths in police custody. Canada has taken supremacist killing a step farther to make it ethically acceptable to kill oppressed populations under the guise of compassionate care. In 2023, Canada killed over 16,000 of its own citizens by euthanasia. Of these approximately one third were human beings with no legitimate medical need for euthanasia. These people were killed solely for lack of meaningful access to medical care, disability supports and housing. In other words they were dehumanized and died of ableism and eugenics driven structural violence. Perhaps more disturbingly, keeping in mind Canada’s support for genocide in Gaza, the continuing cultural genocide of Canada’s indigenous people, the recent Nazi debacle in parliament and ongoing issues with sheltering WWII Nazis and Nazi collaborators are the parallels between Canada’s non-terminal disability euthanasia program (stream 2 and 3 MAiD) and Nazi Germany’s Aktion T4. For those who don’t know, Aktion T4 was a campaign of eugenic cleansing of those with disabilities or mental illness by euthanasia in Nazi Germany. This program was presented as compassionate care to ease the population into mass extermination beginning two years before the mass murder of Jews in death camps commenced. Sadly Canada is an ableist nation with more than a hint of eugenic supremacy. This is not acceptable and must be stopped. I am a disabled Canadian and I am a human being with thoughts, feelings and advanced skills capable of making meaningful contributions to Canadian society. I worked hard when I could and made significant contributions to my community and want to live without having to choose between the horrible suffering of deprivation and barriers to further participation (structural violence) OR death. To be clear one cannot volunteer to be euthanized under this kind of extreme duress so calling it a voluntary program to shift responsibility is ridiculous. Whether by a soldiers gun, deprivation of the necessities of life or a doctors needle mass murder is mass murder. Trudeau and Freeland are no different than Netanyahu. In Solidarity ❤️🩹🪶🍉

Published - Another Call for Compassion and Transparency in Treatment of Haitians. Here’s the thing: The treatment of Haitian refugees in Jamaica requires careful reflection and action. While our initial gesture of providing sanctuary to disabled orphans was commendable, the recent deportations and lack of transparency raise serious concerns. By addressing these issues and proposing solutions that prioritise the well-being of the orphans, we can uphold our nation’s values and ensure that we remain among the beacons of compassion and justice in the region. This column aims to address the key issues, propose solutions, and call for a compassionate and transparent approach to the situation. I cannot help but wonder: What are the psychological impacts on children when their caregivers are deported? Tomorrow marks an important moment: Canadian Blood Services will be making a public apology. In 2022, CBS made a significant shift by abandoning the 3-month donor deferral period for men who have sex with men, choosing instead to evaluate all potential donors based on higher-risk sexual behaviours, irrespective of their gender or sexuality. Though this policy change was a step forward, it couldn’t undo the decades of discrimination faced by the gay, bi, queer, Two-Spirit, and trans people, along with the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community. A public apology is crucial in acknowledging past wrongs and moving towards genuine inclusivity and respect within our healthcare services. I am here to witness and support this change. #Inclusivity #HealthcareEquality #CanadianBloodServices

Founder & Executive Director at Aura Freedom International. Writer, Activist and Human Rights Advocate Working to Eradicate Violence Against Women and Human Trafficking. Feminist AF.
Yes, we're at Queen's Park but you can't tell in this photo, which is exactly why I chose to post it. Because THIS is where it started. In the community. On the frontlines of male violence against women. Decade after decade. Feminist-led work. Survivor-led work. Tireless work. Thankless work. Tough work. Fulfilling work. Endless work. Yesterday, Aura Freedom International and Women's Habitat of Etobicoke witnessed the debate of Bill 173, the Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act, 2024. As leaders of the Urgent Call to Action to have Toronto declare IPV an epidemic in 2023 (https://lnkd.in/gvWAj2Kv), we brought our teams and other advocates to Queen’s Park to ensure our communities were represented, and we were in great company with survivors and advocates from across the province who have done the same in their own municipalities and paved the way. We thank the NDP members who sponsored the Bill and uplifted this work - MPP Lisa Gretzky, MPP Jill Andrews, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam & MPP Peggy Sattler. We were encouraged by the Government’s support and look forward to collaborating to meaningfully address IPV, which entails addressing root causes and investing in prevention, not simply responding when it has already happened. The studies and research have been done - what we need now is a strong commitment to end the oldest epidemic - and pandemic - that affects us all.
