📢 Nearly four in ten children are now living in poverty across the North West – with this figure rising to one in two in the worst-hit constituencies. For many this means being excluded from activities like school trips and days out, not having clothes that fit them, going to school hungry, and in some cases sharing a bed or sleeping on the floor. 🗨 End Child Poverty Coalition Manager Rachel Walters said: “Whoever wins the election needs to urgently get a grip on child poverty. Rising costs and stalling wages are making it impossible for families to make ends meet. "We need a social security system that’s fit for the 21st Century. One that ensures all children can flourish, instead of one that pushes families into poverty, with its two-child limit to benefit payments. This policy must be scrapped immediately." 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gzVvXqbK

As someone who lost a parent to Covid, I know all too well the devastating impact of this pandemic. But what really strikes me is thinking about how different my own story could have been if this pandemic had hit 20 years earlier. As a first-generation, low-income student, I wouldn’t have had the safety net to keep going. Instead of attending an Ivy League school, I likely would have had to start working immediately just to help my family make ends meet. That’s why I’m so proud of the work we’ve done at Marked By Covid to champion #BabyBonds in California—providing eligible children with a financial foundation for their future. And now, we’re taking the next step to ensure every child who is entitled to this benefit knows about it and can access it. This is about more than dollars in an account; it’s about giving kids a shot at the future they deserve, no matter what challenges life throws their way. Check out this article to learn more about the initiative and the difference it’s making. Let’s keep building a safety net that ensures no child’s future is cut short. 💜

Health Equity North's vision is to end health inequity through research, policy impact, and public health improvement - which is why we support the Children's Prosperity Plan’s blueprint to reform the benefit system to become fairer, and work towards lifting families out of relative poverty. We believe that, in the long run, implementing these changes will pay for itself with the inevitable increase in productivity and improvement in health outcomes.
As children return to school today at the start of the new term, it is a national disgrace that 4.3 million of them are living in poverty. We’re mobilising supporters from across civil society to start an urgent conversation on the issue of child poverty. We’re calling on the Government to make 3 policy changes to lift 1 million children from poverty in the UK. These are: 1️⃣ Removing the two-child limit 2️⃣ Abolishing the benefit cap and 3️⃣ Reducing maximum deductions from universal credit from 25% to 15%. Cherie Blair CBE KC, said: “I am pleased to be a launch supporter of the Children's Prosperity Plan and their mission, which I think is ambitious yet imperative: to lift 1 million children in our country out of relative poverty by 2030. This goal is not just a number; it represents a million lives changed, a million futures brightened, and a million dreams revived. Achieving this requires more than just policy changes; it demands a united effort from every corner of society. From government bodies to private sector champions, from local communities to international partners, we must all come together in a grand coalition for our children. Mobilising this collective strength, we will ensure that the future of every child is defined not by the circumstances of their birth but by the boundlessness of their potential.” Listen to Cherie from 1.22 on BBC Radio 4 Today: https://lnkd.in/enSujGSn Read in The Telegraph: https://lnkd.in/es9B8MXU Read in The Daily Mail: https://lnkd.in/ej3GJC3T Read in The Independent: https://lnkd.in/eN52H4Vz Read in The Evening Standard: https://lnkd.in/eCvC3MxH Learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/e2d6fJRT Sign our petition: https://lnkd.in/ewEvb7YH

A £55 million fund has been announced to combat rising child poverty in the North East, a region facing some of the highest rates of deprivation in the UK. The initiative, led by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, aims to address economic disparities and provide crucial support to children and families. The fund forms part of the government’s broader levelling-up agenda, targeting areas with deeply entrenched economic challenges. Recent figures reveal that over 35% of children in parts of the North East are living in poverty, significantly higher than the national average. We observed Strong Family Sunday yesterday, but our commitment to caring for vulnerable children and families around the world continues. 🌍💛 Today is World Orphan Day, and we want to highlight a fantastic resource for supporting vulnerable children in the best possible way: “...effective and sustainable poverty alleviation doesn’t start with bringing in lots of outside money; rather, it begins with an asset-based approach—identifying local resources that can solve local problems. In this situation, an assets-based approach reveals that the most essential asset for child-rearing is already present in the most impoverished settings: family.” - When Helping Hurts: Vulnerable Children by Brian Fikkert and Jack Eans 📖 Find this powerful book on ethical mission work and other resources in the Strong Family Sunday Toolkit. 📚 These materials are available year-round and include educational content and guided prayers for your devotional time with friends, family, and church communities. 🙏🏽 #PureReligionSunday #StrongFamilySunday
