During our daily grind, it’s easy to find ourselves feeling overwhelmed and stretched too thin. Burnout is a real challenge many of us face, but the good news is that we can take proactive steps to recognize and prevent it. 💪 Recognizing Burnout: Why It Matters Burnout isn’t just about feeling tired – it’s a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It can lead to decreased productivity, health problems, and a sense of disconnection from work and personal life. Recognizing the signs early can help us take action before it becomes overwhelming. 3 Tips to Prevent Burnout: 1️⃣ Prioritize Self-Care: Insight: Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Taking time to recharge and care for yourself is crucial for maintaining energy and resilience. Tip: Schedule regular breaks throughout your day. Whether it’s a short walk, a few minutes of meditation, or reading a book, make time for activities that rejuvenate you. 2️⃣ Set Boundaries: Insight: Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time helps create a balance that prevents burnout. Tip: Establish a “shutdown” routine at the end of your workday. Turn off work-related notifications, avoid checking emails after hours, and dedicate time to unwind and relax with activities you enjoy. 3️⃣ Seek Support: Insight: You don’t have to face burnout alone. Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or professionals can provide relief and perspective. Tip: Connect with your support network regularly. Share your feelings and challenges with trusted friends or colleagues. If needed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help, such as a counselor or coach, to navigate stress and develop coping strategies. Bonus Tips: Recognize Early Signs: Pay attention to how you’re feeling. Persistent fatigue, irritability, and loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed can be early signs of burnout. It’s important to listen to your body and mind. Open Up the Dialogue: Don’t be afraid to talk about burnout with your team. Normalizing conversations about stress and well-being can create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable seeking help when needed. Celebrate Small Wins: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Recognizing your efforts can boost morale and motivation, helping to counter feelings of burnout. Feel free to share your experiences and tips!

Burnout - why I spontaneously took the week off Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. Here are some common signs of burnout: 1️⃣ Exhaustion: Constantly feeling tired, both in your body and mind, and being scared or worried about the future. 2️⃣ Cynicism and Detachment: Loss of interest in work or activities that you usually love and enjoy; feeling disconnected from colleagues and family; a pessimistic outlook on work and life. 3️⃣ Feelings of Ineffectiveness and Lack of Accomplishment: Feeling like what you're doing doesn't matter or isn't recognized, leading to decreased satisfaction and a sense of failure. 4️⃣ Decreased Performance: Burnout mainly affects everyday tasks at work. People with burnout feel negative about tasks, have difficulty concentrating, and often experience a drop in productivity. 5️⃣ Health Problems: Over time, serious chronic stress from burnout can lead to physical health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and vulnerability to illnesses. 6️⃣ Escapist Behavior: To cope with burnout, some people might engage in escapist behaviors, such as substance abuse or excessive use of television or the internet. 7️⃣ Irritability: Burnout can cause people to lose their cool with friends, co-workers, and family members more easily. Tension and irritability can also lead to more conflicts. 8️⃣ Lack of Sleep: Insomnia or not being able to sleep enough can be a sign of burnout. I was already showing 6 of those symptoms. Several weeks of dealing with very tough topics at work, providing support to my coworkers, searching for solutions that seemed impossible to find - all of this brought me dangerously close to a burnout. And I know from experience how hard it is to come back from one. This time I thankfully saw on time where this is headed. Once I realized I had issues getting out of bed I knew something was seriously wrong. And I pulled the emergency break. You can love your job and still feel completely overwhelmed sometimes. If you notice even some of the symptoms mentioned above, seek support and find ways to manage your stress. Take care of yourself, so you can take care of others. Nadine Koehler thank you for providing support and guidance 🙏 (and for introducing me to my Inner Leader - we are getting to know each other more and more 😉) So, this is the only post for this week. I am spending it travelling through (rainy, but still beautiful) Sardinia 🏝 Take care 🤗 #burnout #selfcare #mindfulness

Burnout is the last part of the slope for most people. A select few reach burnout and instead of staying at the bottom, they turn it into a curve and go back to motivation through sheer willpower. But many people remain stuck here, and regret sets in. Burnout is where you become unwilling to work, lose all motivation, and give up on being productive. Personally, I’ve reached burnout many times. I gave up on gaming content creation, video editing, photography, and more because I didn’t see results within two weeks of starting. In photography, repeated rejections from Getty Images and Shutterstock destroyed my confidence. Sadly, I never got back into those fields. However, in other fields that brought me joy, I found the opposite effect. Whether I got rejected or not, I was able to keep working because this time, my motivation wasn’t from TikTok—it was personal. Still, burnout happens. This leads to the next part of the topic: What to do when you feel burnt out. To be honest, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, so I’ll share what works for me and include a link to some tips from a group of smart people at BetterUp(https://lnkd.in/dbA3ds3Z). Personally, I handle burnout by stopping. I stop doing whatever caused the burnout and switch to a different hobby. For example, when I feel burnout from programming in Python or studying Django, I drop my textbooks and move on to graphic design (my safe space) or hop on Call of Duty and cause some havoc for a while. Then, I remind myself why I started that path in the first place, think about the life I want to live, get re-motivated, and go back to work. This method has been effective for me time and time again. In conclusion, my advice for handling burnout is this: Find what helps you relax, and never forget why you started working in the first place. If you do, you’ll give up and grow old with regret. Also, don’t push yourself to keep going when burnout hits—while you’re tired, it’ll only make you hate the work. Good day, and go get that bag.

Business and Leadership Coach | Proven Entrepreneur | Sparring Partner | NED Supporting my clients to achieve their greatest potential
Burnout I have a theory..... I was with a client yesterday, and the topic of burnout came up. Now, this person wasn’t feeling burned out, but they were feeling stuck, struggling to focus and prioritize, and generally frustrated, and they were concerned that they might suffer burnout. Now more than ever, I hear that someone is suffering from burnout, and my clients are experiencing an increasing number of their team members taking sick time due to burnout. The WHO definition: “Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job reduced professional efficacy. What I will say may be controversial, but I will say it anyway. Preventing burnout is something that we are totally in control of. If we allow ourselves to become burned out, then there has to be a reason why we allow ourselves to suffer. Some provocative questions to ask ourselves: - Do we like being the ones who have all the answers? - Do we like feeling indispensable? - Do we fear that we couldn’t find a better job? - Do we like proving to ourselves that we aren’t truly worthy of being respected and appreciated? - Do we feel comfortable being the victim? When asking these questions, dig deep. These are often hidden from us and based deep in the sub-conscience. I passionately believe that we have the power to make choices. We are not victims but the controllers of our destiny; even when we feel powerless, we are not. We can take control, and we must. Later this week, I’ll continue the conversation about taking back control. I am very much looking forward to hearing everyone’s comments!

Understanding Burnout: It's More Than Just Being Busy When we think of burnout, it's easy to envision someone overwhelmed with tasks and deadlines. But the reality is, burnout is nuanced and can manifest differently based on various factors. Research has identified three distinct types of burnout: Overload Burnout: The classic scenario of working tirelessly to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. Signs include neglecting personal needs and risking health for career success. Coping often involves venting emotions and taking on more responsibilities. Under-Challenged Burnout: Surprisingly, burnout can stem from feeling underutilized and unstimulated at work. Signs include craving more challenging tasks and feeling stagnant in career growth. Coping mechanisms involve distraction and avoidance. Neglect Burnout: When a lack of guidance and structure at work leads to feelings of helplessness and incompetence. Signs include giving up easily and feeling demoralized. Coping involves learned helplessness, where individuals feel powerless to change their circumstances. Identifying which type(s) of burnout you're experiencing is crucial for finding effective solutions. Here's how to address each: Overload Burnout: Develop emotion regulation skills and separate self-worth from work. Diversify your identity by investing in non-work areas of life. Under-Challenged Burnout: Set small goals to learn new skills and consider job crafting to make your role more fulfilling. Neglect Burnout: Regain agency by setting boundaries, delegating tasks, and communicating with your boss about workload concerns. Prioritize self-care outside of work. Remember, burnout isn't one-size-fits-all. By recognizing the specific type(s) you're facing, you can tailor solutions to overcome them effectively. #BurnoutAwareness #WorkLifeBalance

"Burnout can fool us into believing that we have no control and no options. Yet when we turn inward, we see that each of us has control over our responses to anything life may throw our way." In my latest #bitesizedbusinessbooks review, the upcoming BURNOUT IMMUNITY: How Emotional Intelligence Can Help You Build Resilience and Heal Your Relationship with Work by Kandi Wiens, the author shares her personal experiences recovering from burnout, does a deep dive across latest research in the space, explores the many factors that can lead to burnout (whether personal or professional) and most importantly, outlines effective ways to build proactive, ongoing resilience as well as heal from burnout. When we think of stress, we tend to think of stress as a bad thing, but Kandi shares that stress (in this case, eustress!) can be a catalyst for growth provided we frame it with the right mindset. While the book pulls heavily on findings and examples sourced from the health care and law enforcement fields, Kandi also layers in a variety of anecdotes from other professionals and individuals. By far my favorite part of the book was the incredible evidence for strong relationships, positive company culture, and community as super-powers against burnout: in fact, according to Kandi, “supportive relationships have a direct mitigating effect on all three aspects of burnout: exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy.” The theme of connection comes up again and again throughout the book: whether it's the 3 types of meaningful connections (work, relationships, and values) that help to manage work-related stress, or the importance of fighting isolation as a direct cause of burnout, connection seems to be the key to neutralizing stress and strengthening adaptability and resilience. The book provides a variety of resources to help you identify your values, assess what you need to thrive, and recommendations to renew your well-being. BURNOUT IMMUNITY is packed with insights and ideas that can help you understand and reframe your experiences and build towards a burnout-proof future, so that “you can start reimagining the self you’d most like to be and the life you most want to lead.” Whether you know someone who's dealing with burnout, or just want to better understand it as a phenomenon, this book is an invaluable read!

Overworking is not the only cause for burnout (you’d be surprised) 🔎 Welcome back to this video mini series about busting myths around burnout. Check video number 1 about the stages of burnout in the comment section.💡 👉 Most people think burnout only happens when we’re overloaded, but that’s just one cause for it. In reality, burnout comes in different forms, and knowing which type you might be leaning towards can help you take the right steps to heal. 👉 Here are the 3 main types of burnout: 🔴 Overload burnout This type happens when you’re always going full speed, taking on too much, and struggling to keep up. Questions to Ask Yourself: → Am I constantly working late or taking work home? → Do I feel like I can never take a break or guilty when I’m not working? → Am I saying yes to everything, even when I’m overloaded? 🔴 Under-challenge burnout This happens when your job doesn’t stimulate or challenge you, leaving you feeling stagnant for a prolonged period of time. Questions to Ask Yourself: → Do I feel bored or disconnected from my work? → Do I find myself clock-watching and lacking excitement in my work? → Do I feel like my work doesn’t allow me to grow? 🔴 Mismatch burnout This happens when your job conflicts with what you care about or believe in, making it hard to keep going. Questions to Ask Yourself: → Does my work feel misaligned with my personal values? → Do I feel disconnected from the company’s mission or culture? → Does my work make me feel like I’m compromising my integrity? 💡 Take action: identify which type of burnout you’re more prone to experience and start making small changes to regain balance. It’s not just about working less. It’s about working in a way that fulfills and sustains you. 🌱
