My motivation for founding Let’s Connect Women over ten years ago was threefold. Firstly, I frequently heard from my corporate styling clients about their struggles with self-confidence, their personal style, and the challenges they faced with other women in their organisations. Many reported experiences of bullying, ghosting, and competition rather than support, collaboration, and camaraderie. Secondly, it was a time when Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) were becoming prominent topics within the workplace. However, despite these being company objectives, the reality within many organisations was often quite different. Lastly, at a female-focused event, two women leaders shared their stories of rising to business success. I left the event feeling disappointed and shocked. One leader, a trailblazer in her industry, shared her incredible success but failed to disclose the moments of doubt, the times when her business didn’t go as planned, and the tough periods. I realised there was a need for a space where women could be vulnerable, share their highs and lows, and learn from each other’s experiences. This realisation led to the birth of Let’s Connect Women events. The other speaker, a High Court Judge, spoke about her education and journey to becoming one of the few female judges at the time. Listening to her, I felt my own version of imposter syndrome. However, when she admitted that she suffers from imposter syndrome almost every day, fearing someone would expose her as a fraud, I was floored. How could a woman of her stature doubt herself? These experiences highlighted a need for change: women competing rather than collaborating, and women suffering from imposter syndrome and lack of confidence despite their success. Thus, Let’s Connect Women was born. Our organisation authentically supports women by creating incredible experiences where they can come together to learn, be inspired, and connect with like-minded individuals. We provide a space where women can reconnect with their true essence. In our busy lives, we often neglect self-nurturing, celebration of our wins, and finding the confidence to make an impact. With over 30 years of experience in fashion and business, I’ve seen a sad truth: many women don’t see themselves as fabulous as others see them. As a Style and Brand strategist, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of the right outfit on a woman’s self-esteem, success, and happiness. We have the pleasure of knowing, loving and working with gals in charge and as a female led company ourselves, we really wanted to get a peek behind the corporate curtain to learn how they personally found being a woman in business. They all had phenomenal answers to our questions, and so many similarities that had us nodding our heads in agreement. Here are 5 common key points that resounded exactly the same across different women, different industries and different stages of life. 👉 Boundaries: Setting those healthy boundaries keeps the work-life juggle in check, from boss mode to home mode. Rising the Girl Power in the Business Jungle 👩💼💪 In 2022, the business world witnessed an explosion of 15.5 million new brands. Guess who’s leading the charge for over half of these groundbreaking ventures? You got it — women! It's like we turned the business world into a game of "Guess Who's Boss"? And yes, it's women charging ahead, shattering stereotypes, and rewriting the rules of business. Research has been shouting from the rooftops for ages: women make magic happen in leadership roles. When they take the wheel, productivity soars, teamwork flows like a well-oiled machine, commitment hits the roof, and fairness becomes the standard operating procedure within organizations. Here is a new statistic fact: almost three-quarters of companies that tracked gender diversity in their management reported profit increases of between 5 and 20%, with the majority seeing increases of between 10 and 15%. But wait, here's the punchline: despite all the evidence, only 10% of Fortune 500 companies have women at the helm. I hope this bleak statistic will soon become more vibrant. So, what happens when women rule the roost? They bring a whole new vibe to leadership — shaping values and commitment like a boss. And guess what? The idea of "competence" has had a glow-up; now, when you hear "intelligence, compassion, and creativity," you think of women leading the charge. The art of perceiving the opponent during negotiations evolves to a whole new level. The refined skillset cultivated through business training seems ingrained in the female DNA. It's time to let this prowess flourish fully and reap the rewards of success. What else women leaders can bring to the table? The ability to build relationships, adeptly navigate tough spots, and, most importantly, have the knack for making those seemingly out-of-the-box decisions that end up producing astonishing outcomes. That's the treasure trove businesses uncover when women lead — they infuse the game with a fresh spark, making it infinitely more intriguing. Despite this awesome progress (just look at the statistics in the beginning), the road to equal representation is still an ongoing quest. Women are still bumping into barriers, showing that we've got work to do in creating solid support systems. By the way, in 2023, the country offering the most gender-equal conditions was Iceland with a score of 0.91. Overall, the Nordic countries make up four of the five most gender-equal countries in the world. Glory to the Nordics! The future we're looking at? It's like a party where everyone's invited, with progress, inclusivity, and a whole lot of equality on the menu. So, here's to the power of women — shaking things up, bending the rules, and proving that in this game of business, they’re the innovators and the masterminds writing a whole new playbook.
