The final day of delivery before half term and you never know what you’re going to learn whilst walking the campus.
Welding lesson for our apprentices working within the marine industry that could’ve easily been mistaken for an art lesson.
Some brilliant in-depth conversations on not just how to weld but where they may well end up welding and why. Students sketching and collaborating is so great to see.

Aluminum Welded Parts: Works of Art
At Gilbos nv, we recently specialized in welding aluminum, a challenging process that requires precision and expertise. When done correctly, the results can be truly stunning.
➡️ Aluminum is a lightweight and versatile metal that is often used in aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. However, it can also be difficult to weld, as it is prone to heat distortion and cracking. Our team of experienced welders has the skills and knowledge to overcome these challenges and create high-quality welds that are both strong and aesthetically pleasing.
➡️ In the hands of our skilled welders, aluminum becomes more than just a metal; it becomes a canvas for their artistry. We take pride in our work, and we are always striving to create welds that are not only functional but also beautiful.

Another collaborate and informative MATC Welding & Metal Fab Committee meeting last night.
Here is what left me feeling optimistic and excited about the future of the Trades in Southern WI:
- Welding: Over 30 students will graduate in May of 2024, and 38 students have been admitted for the Fall of 2024 (In 2020-21, there were only 23 graduates).
- Metal Fab enrollments for 2024-2025: 6 at Fort, 16 in Madison
- Skills USA update in Metal Fab: Madison took 2nd place and Fort took 4th place
- Skills USA in Weld: Weld contest 2nd place finish, and a Weld sculpture 1st place winner (Best part.. HER name is Lily. Best of luck at Nationals!)
- Metal Mania Welding and Metal Fab event: May 18th @ the Fort Atkinson Campus. Opportunity to watch metal art sculpture competition, metal shop tour and demos, food and raffle prizes.
7 students also shared their experience with the MATC program and a little on their capstone projects. I asked these students what they evaluated while searching for a career in the Trades. Below were the top 2 responses:
- Ability to learn new skills and not be siloed into 1 role
- Clean and well-lit shop
Other responses included:
- 4-10 schedule
- Positive work environment
There is a new wave of employees entering the Trades. On a positive note, the numbers (in this small sample size) are staying strong with enrollment and graduates. There is also a reality that there is a difference of what this generation values in their careers. Right, wrong, or indifferent - the employers who are able to remain true to their beliefs on what it means to work for their company, while also being conscious of what attracts and retains this generation of Trades worker, will definitely be ahead of the game.

My first month as a welder has been packed with learning and achievements. In this video, I share a key milestone: learning to weld with electrodes – a foundational skill in my development. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; there’s so much more to share
This initial month felt like diving headfirst into an entirely new field, with challenges and practical lessons shaping every step:
I mastered operating and configuring a horizontal welding table. This involves adjusting the needle height, weld speed, and direction (right or left), as well as tailoring the wire size and amperage for different sheet types. Understanding these variables has been essential for producing precise, high-quality welds. I also learned how to create and save specific configurations for each type of sheet, streamlining the process and boosting efficiency.
I honed my skills in manual welding using TIG and electrode techniques, practicing precise “tack welds” to join sheets before completing full welds – a task that requires both focus and patience
Outside the shop floor, I invested time in studying technical drawing and using Autodesk Inventor. I successfully designed a water tank and assembled a tool used in the workplace, reinforcing my technical capabilities.
Operating overhead cranes to safely move heavy sheets was another critical skill I acquired, emphasizing the importance of safety and teamwork in the workshop
I even built a makeshift desk using scrap sheets to have a dedicated space for taking notes during work. It’s not the prettiest, but it’s practical and embodies my determination to find creative solutions
In parallel, I’ve been rigorously studying English and German to pursue my dream of working in Switzerland – a goal that feels increasingly within reach as I grow both professionally and personally. This journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been deeply rewarding.
This first month has taught me about resilience, continuous learning, and the value of striving for improvement in every detail. I’m excited for the future and deeply grateful for the opportunity to grow. Each step takes me closer to my dream of working in Switzerland
I’d love to hear from you: what was the most valuable lesson you learned when starting in a new field?
