In our rapidly changing climate, destructive weather events like fires, tornados, hurricanes, and floods are becoming both more frequent and more severe according to sources like NASA and the Associated Press. When these catastrophes strike residential areas, the resulting damage to homes and other structures can be devastating to those affected, both emotionally and financially. Between the risk of injury or death, the need to evacuate and find temporary housing, and the expensive and time-consuming process of repairing damaged dwellings, extreme weather events can take a major financial and logistical toll on the communities they touch. Home insurance can, to some degree, ease the financial burden that comes with a weather catastrophe, but policies with comprehensive coverage don’t come cheap, especially in areas prone to increasingly destructive weather.

The industry has identified residential insurance risk as a problem for several years. Places like the Florida coast have thousands of homes that could be damaged by storms. The industry’s solution has been to raise rates. In some cases, insurers do not want the extreme risk at all. They leave markets completely. One challenge for the industry is that climate risk continues to grow geographically. Current wildfires in the Western states are part of the proof. The same is true with hurricane-battered Houston. Insurance rates have even gone up in the center of the country due to hail, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. There could be 1,600 tornadoes in the US this yea

I build spaceships and I control the weather! Our NASA award-winning technology will deliver earlier, 2X more accurate hurricane forecasts and improve all weather forecast models to reduce the cost of climate events.
Homeowners, Climate Change impacts you. Hurricanes and extreme weather events are putting stress on the insurance industry so even if you do not live in an area where these events occur, you are going to be impacted by your insurance bill. I do not think this is getting the attention it deserves. Homeowner insurance is basically nuked in Florida and parts of California because of wildfires, extreme weather events, and Florida being Florida. Earlier and more accurate weather forecasts can only help so much. Our Hurricane Hunters Satellites can reduce costs by 155 per extreme weather event but this is a much bigger problem.
As climate change produces more extreme weather, insurers are losing money, even in states with low hurricane and wildfire danger. At first glance, Dave Langston’s predicament seems similar to headaches facing homeowners in coastal states vulnerable to catastrophic hurricanes: As disasters have become more frequent and severe, his insurance company has been losing money. Then, it canceled his coverage and left the state. But Mr. Langston lives in Iowa. Relatively consistent weather once made Iowa a good bet for insurance companies. But now, as a warming planet makes events like hail and wind storms worse, insurers are fleeing.

"Connecting Individuals with Exceptional Financial Advice: Connect with our Lead Advisor Todd McLay!"
Property insurer Intact is launching a pilot program to reduce wildfire damage to homes in Western Canada this year. Driving the news: Intact’s partner, Wildfire Defense Systems, will monitor wildfires in Alberta and B.C., and send a team to fireproof insured homes that are considered to be at risk. The move makes financial sense: Last year, Intact paid out over $1 billion in natural disaster claims after wildfires burned over 100,000 square kilometres across Canada. Measures include removing flammable objects like propane tanks or furniture, setting up sprinkler systems, and spraying chemicals that prevent or slow the spread of fire. Why it matters: Home insurance prices have been rising across the country because of the recent spike in natural disasters. Fireproofing homes, while imperfect, could give homeowners more protection and limit losses, potentially keeping prices in check. One program in B.C. that offers ‘fire smart’ home audits is partnering with insurer BCAA to eventually offer discounts to homeowners who make preventative changes.
