CSR actions, as part of ESG, will come under increasing fire both for their existence and their omission. Largely gone is the discussion about the merits or values of the actions or tolerance for those with different views. Tractor Supply’s About-Face on DEI In a February 7, 2023, press release, Tractor Supply’s executive VP and chief HR officer stated, “Our deeply rooted Mission and Values are the foundation of who we are as an organization. They dictate that Tractor Supply prioritize a safe, respectful and inclusive work environment that values diversity of thought and perspective.” Less than a year and a half later, Tractor Supply issued a June 27, 2024, press release that reads, “We work hard to live up to our Mission and Values every day and represent the values of the communities and customers we serve. We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them. We have taken this feedback to heart.” The press release then lists how Tractor Supply is abandoning its DEI goals, among other shifts. Former Tractor Supply customer, David M. Incorporating technology does not have to be a large expenses. However, ignoring weed escape and not addressing the issue will be an expense to your operation and business. We all know the prices of things - the cost of a concert ticket, a quart of milk, or a Superbowl ticket. But what about the values that lie outside our economic production system? The damage we do to the environment, the cost of slave labor, the pollution that seeps into our groundwater - these values are all externalities to our economic system. As Oscar Wilde once said, "A fool is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." If we want to make wiser decisions about what to buy and what to boycott, we need to start embedding the true cost of things into their prices. It's time for us to reflect what we truly value. Item by item. Trip by trip. Experience by experience. If we don't change our economic system, we can't expect different results from the same old conditions. Let's not be fools. Let's start making changes today.
