"We tell students that it's okay to not be okay, and that it's okay to talk to someone for support" said Alesha Harris, PhD, dean of student holistic health at #GGC. "We validate and affirm that they've done the right thing in reaching out, and that we're there with them along their journey." May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, but at GGC, support and resources for students are available year round. The college's counseling and psychological services team provides consultations, individual and group counseling, workshops, prevention programming and more to reinforce students' mental health and wellbeing. Mental Makeover is a vibrant non-profit that helps people navigate their mental health. Imagine an elementary age child: * learning how to name and describe their emotions * understanding how to handle those “tough” emotions when they arise * being able to communicate with an adult when they are feeling emotionally unwell The Healthy Emotions box from Mental Makeover is designed to do this and much more. I am honored to be volunteering my time with Mental Makeover to spread their resources and messages of hope. If you have school age children or are an elementary teacher and would like one of the Mental Makeover Healthy Emotions boxes, let me know. I can get one in your hands for you to share and explore with those young people in your life. Let’s work together to help our young people learn how to identify, articulate, and navigate their emotions! #mentalwellness #mentalhealth #mentalmakeover
“Social anxiety knew me before I knew it” This is a quote our team resonated with when learning a fellow mental health advocate's story. In their experience and in ours, we learned about our mental health far too late in life. For some, it was a two week unit in high school health class and for others, they didn’t learn about their mental health until they were struggling themselves. Our ‘Understanding Emotions’ mental health education boxes are designed to develop intimate relationships between youth and trusted adults in order to facilitate authentic and genuine conversations at an early age. Equipped with interactive tools and activities striving to teach youth about mental health in an open, light and easy to learn way, these boxes are resources we wish we had when we were younger and we are honored to provide them to youth in our community and beyond. Please note, these boxes are not meant to replace existing social emotional learning curriculums but rather act as an engaging additional resource to enhance them. Stay tuned as we highlight the contents of the box and if you’re interested in learning more, please reach out! . . . #ourwhywednesday #mentalhealtheducation #mentalhealthishealth #educationisvital #letstalkaboutmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthjourney #youtheducation #mentalhealthyoutheducation #socialemotionallearning #mentalwellness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalmakeover
