In the past month, several of our #ZanAssociates team members have had the opportunity to participate in various conferences either as an attendee, a presenter, or exhibitor. These conferences not only allowed us to connect with agencies and partners, but offered valuable information that we can take back and share with our team members. #presenter #exhibitor #communityengagement #equityandinclusion #transportationplanning #SparkConnectionsThatMatter #NACTO2024 #WTSAC2024 #ConnectingCulturesConnectingCommunities #MTCE

I am writing today to personally invite you to attend MobiCom 2023 and to thank the MobiCom Technical Program Committee Co-Chairs Haitham Hassanieh (EPFL) and London Cox (Microsoft). As you know, they and their committee have done a very impressive job selecting 92 papers for presentation in our 29th annual celebration event. They will share the details of acceptance rates and other interesting statistics at the conference but what I can tell you is that MobiCom is growing and attendees will have more research results to learn about and enjoy. Our community is thriving and this level of inclusion is a very healthy thing. While this is awesome, it brought up the question of managing the presentation of these papers. The steering committee met to discuss this issue at length. At the highest level the question was, should we go multi-track or should we extend the conference. Both have their pros and cons. For now, what we decided is that we will move the conference to a 1+4 or 4+1-day format. The reasoning behind this has to do with several factors, which were debated and then a vote was held. We have allocated 15 minutes to each paper. This is a test, which I hope will succeed. There are other options as well, including limiting the number of presentations but we didn’t quite like that. As our community grows, there is much to discuss and adapt, all of which we can do at the conference. One more point, if you are a presenter, keep in mind that 15 mins, which includes 12 mins. of presentation and 4 mins. of Q&A is tight. You will have the inclination to speak fast but, please don’t. The timing is not only hard for you, it is also tight for the audience. So, practice, practice, practice and then practice again. It is an honor to have several hundred people listen to you. So I encourage you to prepare an excellent talk and to present with great clarity. To the rest, I hope you will make the effort to join us at our flagship, longest-running community conference.

The British Library hack has been a terrible thing and this is a courageous blog to tackle it. But it's also representative of a couple of reactions to the incident which are unhelpful. 1. Cause - The BL simply fell victim to a 'smash and grab' attack 2. Outrage - What kind of people would do this to a library?! In any hack that involves customer data being leaked, the victim is the customer, and the at-fault party is the organisation. Not for any reason to apportion blame, but that's the only way to learn lessons and improve. The incomprehensible motivations of the attackers are irrelevant. Hackers will hack. But this also wasn't a random attack in the street, or someone smashing their way into a shop and grabbing the jewels. Outrage is unhelpful, but regardless, any successful attack on systems is a failure of those systems. There is no paradox in providing openly available digital knowledge while maintaining digital security. Both are achieved through investing in digital skills and staying ahead. If the response isn't "how can we invest more in people, skills, and technology, to stop this from happening?" that will be a failure.
