From classrooms to our Support Center, we focus on creating and maintaining an environment where everyone feels welcomed and included and where our similarities and differences are celebrated with kindness and respect. In Primrose schools, teachers use books, music, engaging art projects and more to help children see themselves reflected in the world around them and share about the traditions and activities that are important to their families. And every year on September 29, we celebrate our National Day of Belongingness when we invite families from Primrose and beyond to join us in exploring the idea of belongingness and looking for ways to nurture this feeling at home and in their community. You know what’s better than talking about inclusion? #inclusioninaction It makes such a difference when you can see the results of the work you do. Knowing the kids you impact with this seemingly small action are now 🌟motivated to come to school 🌟coming to school on time 🌟feeling like they belong 🌟smiling more often If only the corporate world worked the same way. If only Leaders could understand that seemingly small actions toward inclusion could have such a big impact on marginalized employees. If only Communities could understand the effects of removing barriers to equity on the people who are serviced by them. We can learn a lot from kids. If only we didn’t have to. How did you spend your day? Today, I was touched by the pure joy radiating from the kids as they warmly greeted The SHINE Club facilitators with hugs and high-fives. The facilitators like Carrie Oswald play a crucial role in providing a nurturing environment for the children. They drawing from their own experiences as racialized individuals to create a brave and inclusive space that helps to foster a sense of belonging and joy. Witnessing these racialized children running under a parachute and sharing stories of their favourite foods filled my heart with happiness. It's truly beautiful to see them embrace their carefree childhood and create unforgettable memories in a safe and welcoming space. The SHINE Club at Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board St. Mary’s school in Trenton.

I was definitely always a more outgoing dance, choir and theater kid, but I didn’t get involved in other groups outside of school or do much volunteering. High school was fun, but I felt I had to be a particular person, look a certain way, and follow specific paths. After high school, I attended Alma College. It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I realized I could do whatever I wanted—I could reinvent myself as many times as needed. I often tell people now, “You’re never too old, and it’s never too late.” It’s all possible, whether it’s starting a new hobby, building your own family, or becoming a different version of yourself. During my junior year, I finally started coming into my own. I started coming out of my shell more and doing things that my inner child loved - like wearing tie-dye shirts all the time just because I loved them. Today, many of our pupils and families are celebrating thanksgiving, which made me reflect on one of the special characteristics that drew me to Akeley Wood School. That is, our vibrant, diverse school community. This is, in part, due to our pupil population comprising students from all over the world, and our school community is all the better for it! To be successful in life, you need to be able to connect with and form positive relationships with people from all walks of life and our schools are at the forefront of encouraging children and young people to develop those positive relationships. In a social media driven world, that relentlessly serves up content that reinforces viewpoints, and so increases polarisation of perspectives, rather than challenges ideas, this important aspect of education - to develop character and embrace our fellow human no matter their background - is harder than ever. In the ten years I spent in education, I've not found a school that isn't value driven, that doesn't try to celebrate difference and encourage inclusivity. However, I know from first-hand experience that the makeup of your school community is key to addressing this, because unless it reflects the modern world, how can it truly prepare students to navigate the word of work successfully and make positive contributions to society? Too often, particularly in the independent sector, students graduate having been cocooned in a bubble. If children and young people are not mixing with peers from a diverse backgrounds from a very early age, they are not receiving the exposure to alternate outlook and ideas they need.
