To understand congenital heart defects, it’s helpful to remember how the heart is meant to function. A normal heart has valves, arteries and chambers that circulate blood in a recurring pattern: body to heart, heart to lungs, lungs to heart and then heart out to the body. When valves, chambers, arteries and veins are malformed, this circulation pattern can be impaired. Congenital heart defects range in severity, such as “holes” between chambers of the heart, to very severe malformations, such as the complete absence of one or more chambers or valves. Remember to take care of your heart, we each only have one. Falls can result in serious injuries and long-term mobility issues that affect daily activities. To prevent falls in seniors, consider these top tips: 1. Check Your Health: Consult your doctor about managing conditions like arthritis or diabetes that can impair walking. Be aware of medication side effects and adjust lifestyle habits if necessary. 2. Stay Physically Active: Engage in regular physical activities, such as walking, water workouts, or Tai Chi, to maintain strength, flexibility, and coordination. A physical therapist can recommend activities suited to your health and age. 3. Change Home Habits: Modify your home to minimize fall risks by removing trip hazards, securing cords, and installing assistive devices like handrails and non-slip mats. Consider using products like the HurryCane, grab bars, and rollators for added safety.
