While most children diagnosed with autism present with some form of developmental delay from the time of their birth, an estimated quarter to a third of all autism cases demonstrate normal, that is neurotypical, development for the first 12-24 months of age, followed by a regression and loss of previously achieved developmental and verbal skills. The reasons why autistic regression happens are largely unknown, as regressions are rarely a subject of detailed clinical investigations. https://lnkd.in/eHmWsPR3
#Autisticregression is a phenomenon where a child suddenly loses his or her developmental milestones and previously acquired language and social skills, and regresses into autism, or into a more severe form of autism. Symptoms such as #fever, irritability, vomiting, incessant crying, sudden changes in #sleep patterns and emergence of #seizures, #aggressive behaviors and/or sensory and motor abnormalities are often noted around the time of autistic regression. Since instances of autistic regression are rarely a subject of detailed clinical investigations, their #etiology remains largely unknown. Additionally, there are also reports of unusual patterns of regression—including repeated regressions, or regressions in late childhood or adolescence, followed by onset or worsening of seizures. The repeated/secondary regressions in autism, the emergence of aggressive behaviors and their possible links to seizures will be the subject of the upcoming Synchrony 2023 presentation by John Gaitanis MD, Director of Child Neurology, The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, #Pediatric #Neurologist, Epileptologist, Hasbro Children's Hospital.
