Please look at an event on March 14th for Civic Learning Week: "Perception versus Being Together".
In unveiling the intricate workings of perception, exposing its role in crafting optical illusions and distorting our grasp of visual reality, we uncover a startling revelation: this very mechanism extends its reach into the fabric of our interpersonal interactions. Immersed in a battleground of perceptions, we find ourselves entrenched in divisive narratives, trapped within the confines of "Us-Against-Them" mentalities dictated by narratives that grip us relentlessly, rendering us blind to alternatives. To transcend this perceptual stranglehold and cultivate a new mode of communal existence, we embark on a journey of physical engagement and shared activities, from the humble handshake to more elaborate exercises, forging connections beyond the constraints of perception's sway.

Director, Innovation and Strategic Projects at Shasta College
Had a great time this morning discussing the results of our research study on adult learners who left (and some who returned) to Shasta College and College of Continuing Education (CCE) at Sacramento State with Project Attain and California Competes. We were hosted by Dakota Pawlicki, Director of CivicLab.
Always happy to talk with folks who are trying to make higher education more accessible and doable for adult learners!

Ultimately, the goal for us at Academy21 — and for the schools and local authorities we work with — is to see students reintegrate into the mainstream environment whenever it’s right for them.
Through a combination of strong academic focus and support for well-being in a stable learning environment, we guide students to reconnect with their learning, develop their confidence and build positive routines, providing a pathway for their successful futures.

This was such an insightful event! 👇
We had a great overview of the National Civic Impact Accelerator's Action Learning Process and captured lots of insights from participants.
My key takeaways were:
🧭 Leadership of civic is key, but can (or should) be at multiple levels, and in partnership with local partners and communities.
☑ Translating intentions into actions is hard, civic delivery plans are needed.
💰 Securing the resources to do civic well is increasingly hard (and getting harder), but this work can't be done well without skilled people, time and money.
💬 Communicating with inclusive narratives helps connect civic activity with real community concerns, and this work is often based on deep relationships that are hard to hand-over.
🤝 Who gets to lead, contribute and shape civic activities can too often be based on existing power dynamics. Part of 'becoming civic' is recognising power imbalances, and where needed, addressing them.
Thanks and well done to the fantastic speakers and organisers: Gemma Adams, Zoe Williamson, Dr Femi Owolade, Sarah Rees, Abi Lucy-Lloyd, Katrina Kelly, Helen Featherstone, Laura Poole, Sophie Heaton, John Fell, Rebecca Hirst-Nelson, Julian Dobson & Nick Wright.
Excited for today's webinar - Becoming Civic: Reflections on the First Phase of NCIA’s Action Learning Programme. Our partners from the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) and CRESR will be delivering the session, sharing some of the amazing results and insights. We're also joined by several fantastic colleagues from the action learning programme to share their first-hand experiences, and the impact this programme has had on their institutions and partners. Don't worry if you've missed the event today, we'll be recording the event and sharing insights in the coming weeks - sign up to our mailing list to be kept up to date!
