Debt Finance is the single most active group with respect to lateral Biglaw hiring in New York. I'm specifically talking about Lev Fin (both sponsor and lender side), Private Credit/Direct Lending, Fund Finance, and broad-based Debt practices. The Finance space in Biglaw is nuanced and it can be tricky suss out a given platform's client base, structure, and focus based on their website. Estate Planning Attorneys: What tasks do you lose money on? Take a visual or mental tour through your client engagement process, step by step. Or take 5 minutes and quickly write it out. It does not have to be anything amazing for this exercise (though you should make it more robust for its own sake). Then quickly assign an hourly dollar amount you would be willing to pay someone to do that task. $150/hour for client meetings? $10/hour to confirm that meeting the previous day? $50/hour to draft documents or fund? What does that look like? If you are an attorney doing $10/hour work, you are losing money. Not in the sense that money is walking out the door, but you are not appropriately leveraging your time. If you are willing to pay yourself $150/hour but are doing $10/hour work, that is a different of $-140 dollars! When you think about who to hire first, either hire a staffperson who can make you money (think a funding or estate administration paralegal if you do that type of work) or someone who can give you time back to your day and can take off your shoulders the tasks that have the biggest negative dollar difference.
