The seismic landscape of Italy and its neighborhood is a testament to the dynamic forces that shape our planet. My latest map reveals over 16,000 earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 2.5, occurring from 1923 to 2023, offering a window into the region’s geological activity. Can you identify the most seismically active areas? Grasping these seismic patterns is crucial for fostering resilience in the face of natural disasters. For those captivated by geospatial data and eager to visualize such intricate patterns, my tutorial provides the perfect starting point. Discover how to harness the power of R programming and data visualization to bring these seismic insights to life. Another interesting land seismic data example! Note how the wavelet from a 50-feet depth source is very different from that at 100 feet and 5 feet. This shows how the thin near surface has a big impact on the data. A vibrator will have a bigger effect from the near surface. Understanding this helps acquisition and processing. A raster plot approach for time-series can yield multiple patterns. Here is a physical oceanographic example of 1-minute interval tide levels for the 2016 year (526,099 individual points). Sloping blue lines are tied to the Moon's orbit. Solar influence seen by red regions after sunrise and sunset (line shift from summer time change). Compare this to the Excel graph. Both have the same data but the Surfer plot, from Golden Software, has much more information.

I am a Research Fellow at Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. My research interests are Statistical Mechanics, Statistical Seismology and Stochastic Modeling.
🌍 Exciting News in Statistical Seismology! 🌍 I'm thrilled to share that our latest research paper, "Assessing the Predictive Power of GPS‐Based Ground Deformation Data for Aftershock Forecasting," has been published in the Seismological Research Letters special issue on statistical seismology. In our study, we explored a novel machine learning approach to forecast aftershock locations using ground surface deformation data from GPS stations recorded on the day of the mainshock. Our findings highlight the potential of this method, despite challenges such as the density of GPS stations and the inherent complexity of the data. Key Highlights: 🔹 Innovative use of GPS data for aftershock prediction. 🔹 Demonstrated ability to limit overfitting even with a limited dataset. 🔹 Significant implications for improving aftershock forecasting accuracy. I’m incredibly proud of the collaborative effort that made this research possible. A huge thank you to Vincenzo Maria Schimmenti for his outstanding work, as well as to Alberto Rosso and Francois P. Landes for their invaluable contributions. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gRBtUqbh #Seismology #EarthquakeResearch #MachineLearning #AftershockForecasting #GPSData #Research #Science
