How disruptive will AI really be for regulators? In a post-Robodebt Australia, there is broad (if uneasy) acceptance that AI will create seismic shifts in how governments deliver their regulatory programs. The question on everyones' minds is not if regtech AI will be used, but how it will be used. The novel risks that AI presents – including empathy and compassion concerns – are worrying to many Australians. Darren Menachemson GAICD, Partner at ThinkPlaceX Australia, has published his most recent article for The Mandarin. In it, he examines the requirements for governments to regulate the use of AI effectively. To read the full article, click here: https://lnkd.in/gzn_dSNH

ICYMI: Last week the UK government published details on its proposed flexible approach to regulating AI systems. The principles outlined aim to support innovation while identifying risks from high-risk deployments. This contrasts with the EU's upcoming AI Act taking a more structured, harmonized legislative approach. As regulatory regimes emerge on both sides of the Atlantic, it still remains unclear what additional guidance UK companies developing AI may seek. This is an interesting guide from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources outlining voluntary AI standards. > The 10 guardrails support the notion of humans being involved when AI is used to ensure the technology is used in a way that's understood and performs as expected > It is particularly suited for sectors where there are high compliance requirements (think healthcare, finance etc) The verification dilemma at the heart of using AI is one I've found is the most challenging and limiting in terms of small-scale use and automating processes. Any thoughts about what this all means for the spread of AI tools across organisations?

Every industry wants to go fast with Gen AI. The question is how do they do this safely? Mantel Group’s David Hodges outlines to The Mandarin how public sector AI aspirants are installing guard rails and embracing failure as a critical element of innovation in this rapidly emerging field. “The ability to push through and learn from mistakes will ensure that service delivery continues to reach the segments of society that need it most. We should all be rooting for AI innovation in government with appropriate guardrails,” Hodges says. “The most detrimental impact of stifling innovation in government is that service delivery stagnates.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gFfwPV4G

Advanced AI systems have already outpaced their developers' understanding because developers can not fully explain AI decision-making, and a system sometimes acts contrary to its operators' interests. Without fully explaining, let alone controlling, AI systems' behavior, the public will face risks ranging from biased employment decisions to physical harm. The Center for AI Policy's latest report offers an overview of explainability concepts, techniques, and recommendations for reasonable policies to mitigate risk.
