Efficiency trumps #democracy, according to International IDEA’s recent #PerceptionsofDemocracy (PODS) survey. Findings show that, for almost half of the respondents across 19 countries, ‘It is more important to have a government that gets things done, even if we have no say over what it does’. This, and other findings point to the root causes of citizens’ dissatisfaction with democracy. Should we be worried? Find out in Ida Hedkvist's blog, which takes a closer look at the PODS results: ⬇️ http://bit.ly/3VRqbMI

Very worthwhile thinking through what these trends mean for sustainability.

Today, I received the Economist Intelligence: EIU "Democracy Index 2023", a "thick" measure for democracy that ranks 167 world countries in five categories: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. Some key figures and data: - More than a third of the world's population lives under #authoritarian rule (39.4%), almost half of the world's population lives in some form of #democracy (45.4%), and only 7.8% live in a "full democracy", down from 8.9% in 2015. - The report subtitled "Age of Conflict" says that democracies "seem powerless to prevent #wars from breaking out around the globe and less adept at managing #conflict at home". - It was the eighth consecutive year of democratic #decline for Latin America and the Caribbean. Two-thirds of the region's 24 countries (16) recorded a decline in their scores. The biggest drop was in #CentralAmerica, driven by declines in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras. - Even though western Europe improved its average score to 8.37 in 2023, many citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the political status quo through rising support for #populist parties. - The measure of #politicalparticipation was the only exception, improving by 0.75 between 2008 and 2023 (despite declines in 2021 and 2023). "The improvement reflects an upsurge of popular political #engagement in developed democracies and waves of political protests in developing economies, providing a counter-narrative to the prevailing narrative of democratic decline." On a personal note, the report contains valuable information that allows us to understand the state of global trends on #democracy. It is well worth reading carefully. However, as an act of faith (and hope!) in humanity, I think this last point on #politicalparticipation should spark more conversation and #action to continue contributing to active citizenship and protect democracy globally. I am committed and grateful to have this opportunity through my work in The Apolitical Foundation #Accelerator at Apolitical Foundation and my social entrepreneurship back in Peru InnovaLab.
