We need organizations dedicated to #metascience, #disintermediation and #defragmentation of the mysterious processes and serendipity that haphazardly constitute the implicit #strategy for “connecting science with social institutions, policy, and diverse communities.” In other words, we need a business model for a diverse body that develops and promulgates a science of #programmanagement for #translationalresearch informed by #implementationscience. For human #health and performance, suggestive models are provided by NASA’s Human-Systems Risk Board and its collaboration with the Program Science Management in NASA’s Human Research Program, or with the Program Performance and Evaluation Office under the Director of the CDC, or perhaps even in nonprofit initiatives such as the Caregiving Initiative of RAND. We have relied too long and too exclusively on insider networks to decide what is important to fund in science and technology. We don't have to abandon that source of wisdom, however biased, and it would be tilting at windmills to try. We can add truly translational organizations and talent that can #transparently and #intelligibly navigate the abyss between supply and demand. Then and only then will #diversity and #inclusion of contributors realize its potential for #collectiveintelligence in programmatic decision making pursuant to innovation in science and technology.

Joining the students at The Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University to hear the Ontario Education Minister speak, was another reason I’m loving being back at school. So many different voices to hear from. But globally, it’s a year of elections and the shortage of real leadership options is frightening. So this session was a class I wanted to attend even more. We’re missing a leadership generation in politics and the gap is widening. Yet….. I’m surrounded by kids whose #leadership and smarts are oozing out of them, in all my classes. So, when Martin Regg Cohn asked Stephen Lecce how to get young people into public life, I leant forward to hear the answer. This is so close to my heart! Why? Because this is the biggest challenge to face modern democracy – not just unearthing the next generation of leaders but getting them to enter politics. Afterall, why would you enter politics in today’s world? The last few years is a hate filled pool of intimidation politics, misinformation, disinformation and let’s face it, hostility and vitriol. And I enjoyed what Lecce had to say to the kids: “You could make a difference at a young age. You could have massive impact.. ideas heard.. “ and your work respected regardless of age. Did I mention Lecce was elected at 31 years old? So I'm thinking he knows about being young and in politics. He then spoke about what leaders need to do – remembering why you're there, because, “the future of the country depends on ministers and government leaders, and any leaders in any sector, public or private, to be mission focused, mission critical.” And then a reminder for all of us when he asked us ‘what do you see?’ “These are humans..first." He suggests we have to return to a sense of humanity in our politics and in our society. As a (recovering) female CEO, there is no debate there! He tells the kids, with a good support system and being totally mission focused, you can get into politics. Good on you Stephen … keep telling the kids to get in the game!
