It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and energy among educators dedicated to enhancing the future of education. School turnaround comes only after we abandon these assumptions: 1️⃣ Kids enter the year at 'grade level' / Kids are all at the same level - look at NAEP/state assessment scores + our own reading/math inventories and we know this is not true 2️⃣ Kids don't know how to behave in our classes - they most certainly do, which is why their behavior varies by teacher 3️⃣ Achievement growth in state standards comes from teaching/reteaching of those standards - for proficient readers and math-ers? Yes. - for students struggling in R & M? Not so much. Yes, dropping these assumptions requires a difficult change in classroom instructional practice. No, #sel, #edtech, #ai et al alone won't revolutionize it. They can certainly help - but practice needs to drive those purchasing choices, not the other way around (which is what we're doing now) #educationreform #educationpolicy

I joined Flint wanting to make a difference in education. It didn’t take us long to realize that shaping the future is… challenging, no? Then, what keeps us going? For me, there are 3 main reasons: 🏫 At Flint, we partner with a lot of schools around the world, and I got to witness first-hand the behind-the-scenes of teachers and admins whose efforts often go unnoticed by students — I came to learn who the real “unsung heroes” are. 🧱 There are a lot of adults (+ young people!) who are devoted to cultivating the future for the next generations. Just as “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” doing anything great will take time and patience — I came to learn from these people grit and tenacity. ☘️ So many people are collectively building upon the same future in their unique ways: from teachers, admins, parents, students, organizations, individuals and more — I came to learn we aren’t alone in this. Somehow, it all feels like a marathon race where everyone is running towards the same direction? (I haven’t run one yet, but aiming to) — and isn’t the point of marathon to torture ourselves for a long time so that we can look back at it towards the end? 🫣 And so… Our new update at Flint today is only the first water stop in a marathon race. 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏼♂️🏃🏻 More exciting things will come!
