The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the Gulf Coast as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs in the nation, with operations centered in Houston - positioning the region at the center of a global marketplace for clean hydrogen. White hydrogen. That's a new one to me. Anyway, H2EX Ltd and Black & Veatch are assessing its potential for a site on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It turns out that white hydrogen is what they call naturally-occurring hydrogen. California-based Thiozen Inc., an MIT spin-off, has achieved a pioneering milestone by producing clean hydrogen from sour gas waste streams in the Permian Basin. This innovative process not only removes hazardous hydrogen sulphide from sour natural gas but also generates zero-emission hydrogen, revolutionizing hydrogen production methods. The pilot, conducted in collaboration with Texas-based A.C.T Operating Company, represents a significant advancement in reducing global greenhouse emissions and improving air quality. This breakthrough could notably transform energy supply economics and enhance community health near hydrogen facilities. Thiozen's technology also aligns with the Permian Basin's potential as a hub for blue hydrogen production due to its extensive oil and gas infrastructure and CCS capabilities. CNX Resources have recently announced a $1.5 billion project to produce clean hydrogen, LNG, and synthetic aviation fuel from coal mine methane (CMM). Located at Pittsburgh International Airport, the project has support from local Democratic politicians but depends on the Biden administration enabling CMM to qualify for the 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit. "We've reached peak hydrogen hype and we are now at a point of realism." Frederik Beelitz, Principal in our Berlin Advisory team presents the first keynote address of the day at the Aurora Hydrogen Conference, addressing the topic 'Security of Demand – A Roadblock for the Hydrogen Economy?' In his keynote, Frederik explored the challenges of closing hydrogen offtake agreements, providing a detailed explanation of Aurora's 'willingness to pay analysis' covering the ammonia, refining, and steel sectors in Germany. Thiozen has successfully completed an in-field pilot unit in the Permian Basin to demonstrate its process of de-souring natural gas and producing clean hydrogen for use in the energy industry. For the pilot, Thiozen partnered with ACT Operating Company, an oil and gas production operation based in Texas, to install its proprietary technology at a gas-gathering site in the Permian Basin. Through this project, Thiozen successfully de-soured - or removed - hydrogen sulfide from the sour natural gas streams to generate zero-emission hydrogen. Hydrogen is proving essential to produce fuels and chemicals, but its production is polluting and carbon-intensive, generating approximately 2% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. According to Thiozen and their research, hydrogen demand is dominated by large cost-sensitive commodity chemical manufacturers, who are facing an increased need for hydrogen to raise profits and meet environmental standards. This pressure is only increasing due to rising regulatory and societal pressure, which is limiting the construction of additional carbon-intensive hydrogen production infrastructure.
