Their strategy is to develop technology locally and to partner with OEMs. HySA Infrastructure is co-hosted by NWU and CSIR and serves as a Centre of Competence (CoC) with the goal of becoming a leading African authority in hydrogen production, specifically electrolytic hydrogen linked to solar resources. HySA Infrastructure CoC focuses on hydrogen compression, storage, and delivery, working closely with OEMs, investors, local and  international research institutions. Their mission is to establish strong scientific and business cases through advanced TRL research, development, demonstration activities, and international collaborations such as SATREPS and Clean Hydrogen Partnerships. This includes knowledge creation, technology demonstration, stakeholder partnerships, and promoting the use of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), green hydrogen, and ammonia in various applications, including the mining sector. I'm excited to share that our papers have been published in two high-impact journals: *International Journal of Hydrogen Energy* (IF 8.1) and *Energy & Fuel* (IF 5.3). One of the papers on Direct Borohydride Fuel Cells (DBFC) faced multiple rejections since 2020, but we never gave up. ⚡ Excited to share our latest publication in Joule that addresses the pressing challenges in scaling up alkaline electrolyzers for large-scale renewable hydrogen production! 🌟🔬You can access it for free until mid-April: https://lnkd.in/eV6PMCVu Our work delves into the fundamental issues that need immediate attention to make this technology viable for industrial applications: - Industrial Challenges: We discuss the necessity to reduce manufacturing costs, enhance safety, and adapt to variable loads while maintaining high efficiency. We compare KPI targets set by the US DOE and Hydrogen Europe. - Fundamental Research: We deep dive into the physics of alkaline electrolyzers. Our paper notably calls for a deeper understanding of catalyst behavior, electrolyte and bubble transport, and membrane optimization to develop more performant and resilient electrolyzers. - Future Outlook: With the first large plants expected by 2030, it is crucial for the academic community to engage in fundamental research that will eventually lead to improved industrial products.
