What do Karl Marx, Dracula and EdTech all have in common? 🧛♂️ 🚩 💻 This past week has been a busy one! 🤯 🖥️ First of all I attended #bett2024 at London’s Excel centre. For those unaware of BETT, it is the world’s biggest #edtech exhibition and quite frankly I have never seen anything like it for #schools and #educators. As a tutor and consultant in schools, the big standout feature of technology for the future of teaching and learning is all linked to AI. 🤖 Microsoft’s presentation on their ‘copilot’ capability had me open mouthed at its game changing influence on teaching and learning. We all need to get on board with where this technology is taking us! 🤷🏼♀️All of this tech change may not happen immediately (I am painfully aware of the recruitment, retention and attendance issues blighting school improvement in the current educational climate), but tuition is at the forefront of many changes in how education is taught and I came away buzzing with how I can future proof my approaches for teaching. And I managed to chat to some super forward looking tutors to boot! Since last week, I have been back home in my ‘edu attic’ delving into the murky depths of Dracula 🧛♂️ and Marxism 🚩to help a bright A level student settle on a question for his coursework. I came away wanting to write the essay myself and it reawakened my knowledge of critical theory, my past experiences as an A level examiner and how illuminating theory can be in finding meaning in literature. 🧐 Now it’s a week of Key stage 3, GCSE and A level English Language tuition and I’ve already been incorporating some of the EdTech and AI features I saw at BETT as well as following up on conversations and connections made during the exhibition. What a super few days to mull over and reignite fire in the belly for teaching and learning. Although…I’m not quite sure what Marx would have made of all of the capitalist tech on show! 🙋🏼♀️If you were a BETT attendee, what were your takeaways? It IS election season and I NEED YOUR VOTE!! We have some news to announce at Archer! The first (but not last!) taste of our AI-powered tutoring platform for the #digitalsat is now available at www.okarcher.com/sat. Every day, students get three math questions at three levels of difficulty that are direct from the College Board -- and they can practice those problems with our AI tutor. This is just the start. Soon, students will be able to access an entire SAT math course, with comprehensive practice questions, Desmos, videos, practice tests, and, of course, an AI tutor that's been specifically built to work with high school students taking the SAT. The SAT has changed, and so should the way students prepare. Every single kid should have access to real, difference making preparation materials. Today is the start. Thank you James Weatherill for sharing this, I t’s great to see Arbor Education’s working in enhancing the student experience with their app redesign, particularly the introduction of the AI chat feature. At a number of our schools the Arbor app has already proven indispensable. Students use it daily to see room changes during the exam season, monitor reward points, access exam timetables, and even read their reports—often before their parents do! This seamless integration of AI not only simplifies data access but also familiarises students with AI as a practical everyday tool. The new AI feature sounds particularly promising. The ability to ask straightforward questions like "Which days do I need my PE kit this week?" and receive immediate answers will undoubtedly help students' (and parents’) school day planning. Moreover, the potential for AI to provide insights into academic struggles and suggest when additional help might be needed could transform educational support mechanisms, offering students timely and personalised feedback. I’m keen to see how these enhancements will empower students to manage their school lives more effectively and develop an environment where technology naturally supports their educational journey. This could indeed be a significant leap forward in educational tools. Could this be the future of student engagement and support in our schools?
