Calling parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, brothers & sisters.... Do you know anyone taking GCSE Maths? The first paper is next Thursday 16th May and I'm sharing the top tips I've put together for my students here. What's your top tip for exam success, let me know if I've missed anything that helps you! Before the exam 😀 Be confident: you have worked hard and this is your opportunity: let’s go! 📏 Check your exam equipment and calculator now and replace any missing or broken items 💤 Keep to your normal routine 🥛 Ensure you are hydrated and eat breakfast before the exam ⌚ Leave time so you arrive at school in time Outside the exam 😱 Don't be distracted by students talking about topics: there’s often someone worrying about a topic that won’t come up 📦 Box breathing can be a good way to focus energy before an exam During the exam 👀 Read: Read the question carefully and highlight important parts 👍 Bold: If there’s a question you’re not sure about , try it anyway. Even if you don’t complete it or get it all correct you can pick up useful marks ▶ Start: With the challenging questions a good strategy is to write down what you do know already, then write what you want to know and see if you can make steps in that direction. 💡 Imagine: If there’s a question with algebra in, think what you’d do for numbers and they try that with the algebra instead 📝 Label ratios 👣 Steps: Write down all your steps so you get all the marks you deserve 📃 Working: Do all your working on the paper and if you use any extra paper make sure it all gets handed in with your paper 🎯 Accuracy: Make sure you have rounded correctly 💭 Answer: Check if you have answered the question asked 👌 Sense: Check if your answer makes sense in the context of the question

The New Year Plan For year 11s This year's year 11 class is a very mixed one. I am teaching third set this year and two thirds of my class are now very highly motivated and aiming for the very top grades. However, I have nine students who are not performing anywhere the level that I would expect by this time of the year. This is very unusual as there are usually just two or three students in this predicament. What I have decided to do is to have an intensive 12 week program aimed specifically at these under performing students. The program is also open to the rest of my year 11's, however, my main focus are my nine students, (as a side note, once my year 10's found out about the program, most of them wanted in on the program too). Depending on the grade that the students are aiming for, they have to complete a set number of Corbett Maths 5-a-day sheets per week. They are not allowed to leave any questions out (solutions are also provided). Students will also have to do 3 exam papers per week. To start with, if they are aiming for a grade 5, they will have to complete the first 10 questions. Grade 7 students will have to complete at least 15 questions as a minimum. As the weeks go on, I would expect the number of questions completed to increase. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Guaranteed, there will have to be some changes to the plan as issues arise, but at least there is a starting point.

💫 Maths GCSE Paper 1 is today 💫 After weeks of preparation with all of my students time seems to have suddenly flown by! Today is both exciting and nerve wracking as a tutor. My students are ready and based on what I see in our sessions everyone should do well, but from this point, it’s out of my control and depends on how they feel and what the paper is like 🤞🤞 I hope your child slept well and is feeling relaxed this morning. Every child’s approach to exams is personal so what they do this morning depends on them, but the less stressed they are the better! Make sure they eat something before they go to the exam so they have plenty of energy for what’s ahead! They’ve done the preparation, so now it’s time to go and show the examiners what they can do. They’ve got this! 💥💥 Final reminders: 🎯read the questions carefully 🎯show all working out 🎯focus on a strong start to the paper 🎯if stuck have a go -what Maths do you know that might be relevant 🎯use correct Mathematical vocabulary in explanations 🎯ask for tracing paper for transformation questions Good luck to everyone who has an exam! I hope the papers are good 🤞🤞

Maths Tutor. Feel good maths. GCSE & A level. Bespoke individual lessons. Limited number of September 2024 places now available to book.
Practice makes perfect! This morning I'm back from a beautiful row at Poole Quay. I have to admit as a novice, I'm far from perfect but definitely improving. My cox was a good combination of helpful reminders of what to do "Heads up!" and funny comments to help us relax. It's the same with maths. You need to learn the skills and then practice them in a fun way. I think my silly sense of humour helps my students relax too. One of my student's parents recently said: "Amazing Anne. He is full of smiles. Always is when returning from one of your lessons." Today I'm sharing two places you can find free predicted GCSE maths papers. Maths Genie offer free predicted papers and answers. I like these and they seem closest to the format of the GCSE. Paper 1 is available to download now and then Paper 2 after the authors have taken a look at actual Paper 1 on Thursday 16th May, and then Paper 3 after the real Paper 2! OnMaths are a site offering the predicted papers questions to complete online which marks them as you go. It shows your grade improving as you get more marks. I would advise still doing the working out on paper to practice recording all the steps. If you know anyone taking GCSE's wanting some practice this weekend please feel free to tell them. I'm putting links in comments to the sites.
