Collaborative efforts between IFC - International Finance Corporation and the government of #Zimbabwe are paying off with tourists visiting Zimbabwe soaring by an impressive 42 percent in Q3 of last year. Since 2020, IFC has forged partnerships focusing on enhancing strategic air access, promoting #VicSFalls as a destination, shaping policies conducive to growth in the industry, and supporting smaller businesses in tourism value chains. And the results are starting to show! The country also saw #tourism-related spending climb by 24 percent during the same period. #stas2024 update Tourism and Development in Sub Saharan Africa: Current Issues and Local (community) Realities This book by Prof Marina Novelli captures many realities that we often discuss at Sustainable Tourism and Africa Summit each year. #stas2024 is no exception. The book acknowledges the paradoxes, complexities and inequalities of tourism in relation to development, wealth creation, growth, redistribution, governance and hosts-guests’ relationships. But there are now realities. For example , there are new complexities with community engagement. I have worked with host communities in Kenya for nearly 25 years, and today the biggest challenges of community integration in tourism is predatory community financing. I will join the community panel at #stas2024 to speak more about this threat. The surge in international #tourist arrivals in Kenya, marking an 18.42% increase over the past 16 months, is a #testament to the effective policies implemented by the Kenya Kwanza administration. This growth, observed since President William Ruto took office in September 2022, reflects positively on the tourism sector, contributing significantly to #government revenue. During a press conference in Nairobi, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura expressed confidence that the numbers would continue to #rise, particularly with the recent launch of the #visa-free entry scheme for #foreigners. Kenya's attractiveness as a #tourist destination, coupled with increased spending and extended tourist stays, is positioning the country as a robust player in the global tourism market. In addition to the economic benefits, Mwaura underscored the #government's dedication to preserving #Kenya's rich biodiversity. Measures are being implemented to protect endangered species, such as the northern rhino, ensuring that they do not face the threat of extinction.
