Brewing up for business growth, dog-welcoming coffee shop Coffi Lab secured a £1.7 million investment from us, sending tails wagging for pooches and owners. With five coffee shops in Cardiff and the surrounding areas, two in Monmouthshire and two in England, with a third opening in Bristol this month, Coffi Lab was established by James Shapland in 2021 after spending 10 years as founder and CEO of Coffee#1. After exiting Coffee#1, James was keen to establish a chain of premium, community-based coffee shops which would welcome dog-owners and their four-legged friends, along with providing exceptional coffee and a quality food offering. Now planning to open a number of new Coffi Labs in south Wales and the south-west of England, the expansion plans are due to create 40 new jobs over the next 12 to 18 months. After seeing explosive growth throughout 2023 with 100 store openings and the debut of a flagship location in New York City's Times Square, Raising Cane's plans to continue expanding at a breakneck pace in 2024. The southern chain—known for its signature chicken fingers (130 calories apiece), Texas toast (140 calories), crinkle-cut fries (390 calories), and famous Cane's sauce (190 calories)—is on pace to open a whopping 90 new locations this year, QSR Magazine reported. In May of 2014, the New York Times wrote a flattering piece “Oakland: Brooklyn By The Bay” comparing the cutting edge culture of Brooklyn to Oakland. As a huge proponent of urban renewal and unique business districts, I was fired up to have played a part in executing on the visioning that was passionately promoted and visioned by Mayor Jerry Brown (aka. Governor Moonbeam) by selling the former Cox Cadillac and putting Whole Foods Markets in this stunning landmark property. Fast forward to more recent times and Oakland has been hit with punch after punch. Out of control crime sprees started gratis BLM rampages and years of a lack of prosecutions made Oakland a national spectacle of dysfunction on Instagram. The rest of the country got back to thinking everyone in California was nuts and who knows how that impacted the most current Presidential elections? If that was not enough, add insult to injury with two pro sports teams vacating the city citing bureaucratic log jams as a reason they left California for the bright lights of Las Vegas. As this all happened, my firm, Retail West, stood shoulder to shoulder with ambitious urban renewal pioneers like #MikeGhielmetti of #SignatureDevelopmentGroup (The Hive Area) and #JohnWayland of #HollandPartnerGroup ( VESPR & The Lark). Despite taking body blows with declining rents and criticism from their financial partners over slow lease ups they steadfastly invested in their vision of incubating curbside appeal. Not only did these folks plow forward with stunning unique and architecturally significant brand builder projects (that would make any city in the United Stated gush in envy) they did so with integrity. They would consistently pass on the easy franchise sandwich shops or Mattress stores and hold out for tenants they felt were befitting of the curbside culture they envisioned years before the decline. If you have roamed memorable urban cores in the United States like SOHO, The Meat Packing District, Brooklyn, Fishtown in Philly or many others one of the common threads is that these areas emerged from dirty seedy areas that were once overridden with “X” (your choice). This has been a dream assignment for our firm (yes, a DREAM not nightmare) as we love the opportunity to be picky and creative for our clients in recruiting businesses.
