https://lnkd.in/eaZ-iQAa As a Production Designer and a filmmaker, Africa has always held a special allure for me. The vast landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant communities offer endless opportunities for storytelling. However, filming in Africa comes with its own set of challenges. From limited resources to logistical obstacles, every production in Africa is a test of creativity and perseverance. One of the biggest challenges of filming in Africa is working with limited resources. Unlike Hollywood productions with unlimited budgets, filming in Africa often means making do with what you have. This can mean using local materials for props and sets, improvising lighting and sound equipment, and relying on the ingenuity of the local crew to make things work. Despite these challenges, there is a beauty in working with locals on location. The authenticity and passion they bring to the production is unparalleled. From actors to extras to crew members, working with locals adds a layer of authenticity to the film that simply can't be replicated. Their knowledge of the land, culture, and customs adds depth and richness to the story being told. Recreating scenes in Africa with limited resources can be a daunting task, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Filmmaking is a collaborative art form, and the challenges of filming in Africa force you to rely on your team in ways you never thought possible. Everyone, from the director to the production assistants, must work together to problem-solve and overcome obstacles. This shared experience creates a bond that can be felt on screen and adds a sense of camaraderie to the finished product. One of the most memorable experiences I had while filming in Africa was recreating a scene of a burning small village. With limited resources and a tight budget, we had to rely on the local community to bring the scene to life. From construction replica small huts to dancing at a village wedding, the energy and enthusiasm of the locals transformed the scene into something truly magical. Their joy and passion shone through on screen, creating a moment that still gives me chills to this day. Filming in Africa may come with its challenges, but the beauty of working with locals on location far outweighs any obstacles that may arise. Their authenticity, passion, and creativity add a depth and richness to the film that simply can't be replicated. So, the next time you're considering filming in Africa, don't let the challenges deter you. Embrace them, work with the locals, and watch as your story comes to life in ways you never thought possible. #Grootersproduction #TalkingFilm #Productiondesignerscollective #Africa #Uganda #Nigeria

#throwbackthursday Over the next few weeks we are going to shine a light on some of the prestigious work from the back catalogue of our brand new Head of CG, Aron Makkai. This week we venture back 16 years and feature the award-winning film, Aslan's Return - The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, featuring CGI on the star of the film, Aslan, contributed by Aron. Directed by Andrew Adamson, the film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. Aron's insights: "With a 2008 release, this is one project that has aged relatively well despite (for the time) the ambitious nature of it. "In 2007, fur rendering was in its early years and CGI in general had not gone through the revolution that light transport brought to CGI in the years following this production. Illumination of the fur was largely based on infinitely small point light sources with shadow maps. Because of these early limitations lighting was a bit of a different beast. "Not only did one have to display artistic prowess and render beautiful images, but it had to be done in this technically limited framework. Doing so required the craftsmanship of reproducing manually the indirect light contributions that light transport and global illumination give for free today. Constantly navigating the edges of the framework to push things forward. "On this movie, my contribution might have been limited, but the knowledge picked up, and the friendships made along the way, have stuck with me to this day." #tbt #throwbackthursday #offline #online #vfx #visualeffects #audio #postproduction #colourgrading https://lnkd.in/emAdxnZN
