The freedom of geometry of casting is hard to beat by other manufacturing processes and people are using the design flexibility of the casting process since the dawn of civilization. Engineers appreciate the design freedom of a casting to come up with compact and easy to manufacture designs. Artists and designer love it to express themselves in unique forms with intriguing complex shapes. And sometimes both go hand in hand. A fine sample is the cast iron observation tower in Loebau, Germany (https://lnkd.in/gRUceWC2). Check it out when you are in the area. It is a very unique piece of architecture. #casting #engineering #design

Structural behavior of cantilever beams: A famous photograph by Benjamin Baker, in which through a living model the cantilever structural principle on which the solution to the Firth Bridge over the Forth was based. -> To illustrate the structural theory of a cantilever beam (Gerber), a human demonstration was carried out. The loads were represented by the person sitting in the middle of the span of the suspended span. The arms of the persons seated on both sides represented the traction at the joints; the wooden bars, the compression at the lower elements, and the bricks, the anchor points located at the pylons. The chairs represent the granite piles. Imagine the chairs 500 m apart and the men's heads as high as St. Paul's cross (London church, 104 m) their arms are represented by steel beams and the canes by 3.5 m diameter tubes at the base you get a good notion of the structure. -> Heinrich Gerber applied in 1866 a theory that consisted in subdividing the continuous beam through ball-and-socket joints "which define a point of zero bending moment". This type of beam with intermediate joints is what is now known as a Gerber beam. The position where these hinges are located allows for influencing the behavior of the beam; therefore, it is not only used directly in some structures but in some projects, a real beam can be idealized by assimilating it to a Gerber beam, whose isostatic allows a simple approximate calculation. #StructuralEngineering #CantileverBeams #GerberBeams #EngineeringDesign #CivilEngineering #BridgeDesign #EngineeringPrinciples #StructuralAnalysis #Architecture #Construction #EngineeringHistory #EngineeringInnovation #StructuralModeling #EngineeringVisualization #ForthBridge #HeinrichGerber #LoadDistribution #StructuralScience #StructuralDynamics

MD @NewLife Infra | Structural Engineer Consultant | We build mega structures that stand strong for centuries.
"Ever wondered about the different perspectives that exist within the same structure? 👀 On the left, it's how most see a building—a majestic facade. Now, on the right witness the structural engineer's view. Every beam, column, and connection tells a unique story of stability, forces, and meticulous design. It's more than just a building; it's an intricate dance of physics and engineering precision. 💡🏗️ Comment down your thoughts. #StructuralEngineering #BeyondTheFacade #EngineeringPerspective"

Check out this amazing video showcasing an extraordinary project! Did you know which software was used in designing the World's First doubly-curved timber-concrete spiral staircase in KF Aerospace Centre❓It's none other than #RFEM by Dlubal Software. StructureCraft Wishing you continued success in your endeavors! 🤝 #structuraldesign #structuralengineering #crosslaminatedtimber
The world's first doubly-curved timber-concrete spiral staircase, beautifully depicted in video form. At heart, we believe in craft - using our engineering and construction expertise to "master-build" something efficient and beautiful. The idea to free-span 70' with a timber-concrete composite helical stair came from our VP Lucas Epp, who wanted to mimic the old Boeing 747 spiral stair up to first class as a feature for the KF Aerospace museum StructureCraft designed and built. Using a special application of timber-concrete #composite, our team designed something special: a stair comprised of doubly curved #CLT with a concrete topping throughout the full #spiralstair. Addition of the concrete provides the required mass to control vibrations in the 70ft free span. Our in-house carpenters fabricated the two CLT halves at our headquarters and shipped them to site in Kelowna, BC for a smooth but complex install. Series | Zollinger Gridshell | Part 7 Digital vs Reality Construction details matching the rhino model The satisfying feeling you get when you see the actual gridshell geometry matches your digital model exactly ! After the construction, I directly took some pictures of these details, since I remember designing each one of them in rhino. It was such a deja vu moment. Hope this inspire engineers and architect not to get lazy, and model as detailed as possible. This always comes with the advantage of understanding your design, the materials, the construction process, and many more ! An innovative retrofitting system applied to a concrete frame structure. The system implements dissipative shear links. The frame system was initially part of my PhD thesis. Few years later it was redesigned for a real application. The interaction between the real structure and the steel frame was numerically simulated with advanced FE models. The global behaviour was studied by means of cutting edge techniques. Prof. Ivo Caliò proposed for the first time this new dissipative layout. Ivo Caliò scientifically supervised the design team (Giuseppe Occhipinti, Ilaria Fiore, Marco Intelisano, Domenico D'Urso, Francesco Cannizzaro, Sandro Liseni Liseni) that collaborated with the construction company for making it real. Since the irregular windows layout on each facade, the steel frames were designed in a tailor-approach. Two layouts are behind the team in the picture. #seismic #retrofitting #innovative #solution #engineering #dissipative #steel Gruppo Sismica
