LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games proposes five additional sports for Olympic Games in 2028 Following its review of the LA28 Organising Committee's proposal, the IOC's Olympic Programme Commission will issue a recommendation to the IOC Executive Board. If accepted, it will then be presented to the IOC Session for approval. Five sports have been proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee for inclusion at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, pending approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). If approved, the final event programme and number of athlete quotas in the additional sports will be finalised in the future. Of the five proposed sports, three have previously been sports contested at the Olympic Games: baseball-softball (1992–2008 and 2020), cricket (1900), and lacrosse (1904 and 1908). Unlike its only previous appearance at the Paris 1900 Games, cricket will not be contested as a two-innings-a-side competition. Instead, the proposal foresees a limited-overs Twenty20 format for the event. The proposed format for lacrosse is Lacrosse Sixes. Lacrosse appeared in consecutive Games in the early 20th century, with Canada winning both gold medals awarded in the sport. Baseball-softball, meanwhile, was most recently included on the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020 in 2021, where hosts Japan won both gold medals. “LA28’s proposed sports ignite the imagination on the field of play and drive culture off it. They’re relevant, innovative and community-based, played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and the globe,” said LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman. “They will bring new athletes to the Games, engage diverse fanbases and expand the Games’ presence in digital spaces, further amplifying LA28’s mission to deliver an unparalleled experience.” They are baseball-softball, cricket, flag football (a limited-contact version of American football), lacrosse, and squash #la28 #summer2028 #olympicgames #losangelesca #fiveadditionalsports #sportsindustry #loc #baseball #softball #flagfootball #lacrosse #squash

Tug-of-war used to be in the Olympic Games. Today, we associate tug-of-war with cookouts and schoolyard games, but for a brief period in the early 20th century, world-class competitors participated in tug-of-war matches on one of the most prestigious stages in athletics: the Olympic Games. Tug-of-war was an event at five Summer Games: in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920. The rules of Olympic tug-of-war were essentially a slightly more regulated version of the game commonly played today. Two teams of eight competitors (or five or six competitors in the 1900 and 1904 Games) grabbed hold of either side of a rope, and two lines were drawn in the middle of the field, 6 feet away from each team. The two sides then battled to pull the opposing team 6 feet over the line closest to their side — or to make the other team fall over. If this wasn’t accomplished within a five-minute time limit, the team that had pulled their opponent the greatest distance was declared the winner. However, there were some unusual rules in Olympic tug-of-war that led to a few odd results. For instance, a country could enter multiple teams into the same competition, which resulted in the United States winning the gold, silver, and bronze medals in tug-of-war at the 1904 Olympics. A similar result occurred after a controversy in the 1908 Games: When the United States complained that the competitors from Great Britain had an unfair advantage from the heavy, spiked police boots they were wearing, the U.S. withdrew from the competition in protest, and all three medals went to Great Britain. After the 1920 Games, the International Olympic Committee removed around 30 sports from the Olympics, including tug-of-war, amid concerns that the event was getting too large. https://lnkd.in/e9VMrU-b

MANU'S HISTORIC DOUBLE BRONZE WITH SARABJOT, NEERAJ'S SILVER+ HOCKEY TEAM'S BRONZE THE FEW HIGHS IN INDIA'S LACKLUSTRE CAMPAIGN AT THE PARIS OLYMPICS ONE TWO MANY NEAR MISSES COUPLED WITH EARLY EXITS OF MEDAL PROSPECTS DENTED INDIA'S DREAM OF 10-PAAR AT PARIS'24 5-medals@Paris'24 (notably without a gold) is 2 medals short of India's Tokyo'21's 7-medal tally, let alone the double-digit haul the Indian contingent had set for itself heading into the Paris Olympics. An upward trajectory from the Tokyo Games is what India had aimed for@Paris'24 factoring at least 10+ strong medal contenders on the back of their medal-winning sprees at major tourneys/competitions heading into the Paris Games. The century+ Indian contingent for Paris'24 did boast of multiple Olympic, World Championships and Asian Games medalists and hence the 10+medal target set was realistic and not over-optimistic. Manu Bhaker's historic double bronze (one with Sarabjot Singh in mixed 10m pistol team event), Neeraj Chopra's silver (gold surely missed) + the hockey team's bronze may be the few highs in what otherwise will be deemed as a lackluster performance by India@Paris'24. A spree of near misses coupled with early exits of our best bets to medal shattered India's dreams of 10-paar @Paris'24. Among India's 10 strong medal prospects, only Manu, Neeraj and the hockey team could medal. One would fairly consider Swapnil Kusale's bronze (Men's Rifle 3 position) as surely a bonus medal. A dozen+ Indian sportspersons did get into the medal rounds but were just not good enough to get onto the podium. The sheer pressure of facing a formidable opponent in the semis or beyond or being over-odd by the magnitude of the Olympics? A plethora of 4th place finishes headlined by Lakshya Sen (Squandering a game against Lee Zii Jia), Mirabai Chanu (lost by 1 kg in aggregate), Manu Bhaker (losing the 25m Air pistol shoot-off) and Arjun Babuta (10m Air Rifle) does sum up a bleak story. Vinesh Phogat missing out on at least a silver medal owing to a bizarre weight disqualification was indeed a thunderbolt that shook the nation. Our female paddlers (Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula) certainly punched above their weight with their maiden pre-quarters and so did Army rower Balraj Panwar making the quarters. Avinash Sable making the 3000m Steeplechase final was another laudable effort.. In short, Paris'24 was a comedown from Tokyo'21 as India's campaign in the French capital could be rounded off as one with few highs, too many near misses+ early round exits. Hopefully, the Indian athletes will come back stronger in LA'2032 and ace the rounds that can see them finish on the podium. #Paris2024 #ParisOlympics2024 #IndiaAtParis2024 #NeerajChopra #ManuBhaker #sarabjotsingh #hockeyteam #swapnilkusale

🏅 Addressing Unfair Play at the 2024 Olympics: A Call for Integrity and Respect 🏅 The 2024 Olympics have captivated us with remarkable athletic performances, but they've also highlighted a troubling trend: unfair play and questionable conduct that undermine the essence of the Games. A prime example is Duco Telgenkamp’s controversial play in the hockey final against German keeper Dannekamp, where Telgenkamp’s interference disrupted Dannekamp’s ability to defend effectively. This incident, coupled with dubious refereeing decisions in basketball semifinals, unsportsmanlike gestures in swimming, and lane encroachments in track and field, has raised serious concerns about the fairness of the competition. These actions go beyond individual games—they disrespect the core Olympic spirit and values. The Olympic Games are meant to celebrate human achievement, honor fair competition, and embody the highest standards of sportsmanship. When athletes and officials engage in unfair practices, they not only tarnish the integrity of the sport but also undermine the very essence of the Olympic ideal. It's crucial that we, as a global community, reaffirm our commitment to respect and fairness. Let’s work together to ensure that future Olympic events truly reflect the spirit of the Games and provide every athlete with a level playing field. 🌟🤝 #Olympics2024 #FairPlay #Sportsmanship #Respect #Integrity #LevelPlayingField #OlympicValues #GameOn #AthleteRespect #UnfairPlay #CleanCompetition #TrueSpiritOfSport #OlympicIntegrity #RespectTheGame #AthleteFairness #OlympicSpirit
