Volume is your friend You need to send out more bids so you have more opportunities to negotiate. In our industry, it's a game of probability. Even if you have the best sales skills or the best bid price, it doesn't guarantee you'll win every job. You have to get enough bids out there to get to the negotiating table as often as possible. You need a high output. When you’re not first, you must be different. I think it’s a common misconception that the primary service of skilled trades staffing is availability. Obviously the goal is to generating revenue. Why else’s be in Sales, right ! The vehicle to do that is of course, put qualified and safety minded tradespeople to work but the primary service offering is risk mitigation. I have observed there are three essential things the GC and Contractor need to keep their business moving forward: 1. To be in a constant state of risk mitigate ( underpinning reputation) 2. To be in a constant state of profitable productivity 3. To be in a constant state of expanding market share. When I go to market these are problems I am solving through Staffing. I am a Salesman. I want the Rolex. But above all else, I want to be known for providing for quality and meaningful service. Lacking money to finance big jobs? I was talking to one of my clients, he's a drywall and framing contractor, and I asked him about an opportunity I found for him through lead generation. It was for a six-story building, but he expressed concerns about financing the labor and materials, as commercial projects often don't offer upfront payments. I advised him not to give up on the job and suggested he approach a small local bank for a credit line and negotiate payment terms with suppliers for better cash flow management, like net 30 or net 60. #Construction #Profitability #BusinessSuccess #Bidding #Estimator #Takeoff #PreConstruction #WinningBids

PSA for all my construction connections so that you don’t fall in the same trap we did: Blue Book Construction Network and Dodge Construction Network are two of the most unethical companies I’ve come across in the past 10 years. The BBB is filled with unanswered complaints to them. This is because they don’t care about you. Their sales reps will bait and switch you, lie to you and do anything to lock you in a contract. Once you sign that contract, you are on your own; they won’t return calls or emails and over the course of a year, your “rep” will change 3 times. Here’s what the original rep promised: 1.at least one networking event a quarter with GCs 2. 100s of calls from GCs from paying to be listed on their site 3. 1000s of high quality bid requests Here’s what we got: 1. Billed for over $3000 2. 50 bid requests, 10 of which had any scope for us 3. Zero support, we were able to get ahold of a rep once who told us we needed to spend more money to get better results. I was also able to get a hold of the original sales person and he said “if you’re not happy just don’t pay the invoice”. You can guess what happens when you take that advice. Blue Book is a free service to GCs and the only GCs that use it are the ones that use it (from what I can tell) are the ones scraping for bottom of the barrel bids. I found MBEX has all the same projects for half the cost and better customer service. Do business with companies that value and respect you.

Plan for bid packages and implement: By bidding packages, you're going to get more money in your contracts. It's a better sequence; you're going to have happier GCS, you're going to just get more contracts, you're going to have negotiating power—it's just better. Now, the question is, how are you going to find the guys? It's very, very simple: you are going to recruit them by going to job sites. This is going to be a little old school, so those guys that are used to computers and stuff, you're going to have to get out of your comfort zone here. According to the Construction Equipment Association, in the first half of this year, sales of construction and earthmoving equipment in the UK were down a 1/3 on last year. Whether you are a “Glass half full” or a “Glass half empty” person, you will have a different view on what this market fact tells you ; 1 - Last year may have been really high and so this drop of 32% could simply be a return to normal. 2 - Perhaps the market is nervous about economic stability, and this is the start of a long-term decline in activity. 3 - And of course you could think this drop is just one part of the ups and downs of a really volatile market. All of these are plausible and require further investigation to see which stand up to scrutiny.
