WHAT IS REGENERATIVE VITICULTURE? After talking with Justin Howard-Sneyd my latest guest on The EAT SLEEP WINE REPEAT PODCAST (Ep 175), this is my definition: Regenerative viticulture is when the focus is on restoring and enhancing the health of the ENTIRE vineyard ecosystem: most importantly IMPROVE soil health, increase biodiversity, and take out as much carbon from our atmosphere whilst minimizing reliance on those external inputs like pesticides and fertilizers. 🔊 Listen to Justin explain below (a sneek peak from Episode 175) why tilling is not a great option for soils... 🔥Duane and Dina are true trailblazers, farming hybrid wine grapes in the high desert of Oregon. Duane says "I feel like I'm farming the surface of the moon." I appreciate Duane's curiosity and observing nature. Last week, Duane told me: "I was a bit concerned about it [mallow/cheeseweed] at first when we quit spraying herbicide.  It hard to pull as it has a very deep tap root. My concerned was that it would compete with the new vines as it was very aggressive in covering the vineyard floor The pigs like it a lot so that was a positive. They pretty much knaw it down to the ground.  Now moving forward, I am doing gopher control with traps and got frustrated with one gophers tunnel system so I just got the tractor and opened up a section between the vines where this weed is predominate.  What I found surprised me, it seems that the gophers prefer this root to the vines roots. I had problems in this new block the year before losing vines to gophers .  There was a cavity in the tunnel system the size of a football that the gopher dug out for storying 2 inch sections of the Mallow's tap root. This tells me that the gophers prefer that weed over the grape vines! Now, the other positive thing about this weed is it's a biannual.  If the gopher does not eat the roots, then the root will die off and that long tap root cavity will allow more fungi etc. to penetrate deeper into the soil where the grapes roots were located. I have also read that it breaks up hardpan soils. Nature seems to have all the answers, we just need to get out of our own way and pay attention.  The article below says it must be dug out to manage the weed, I beg to differ, add livestock that will eat it!" While I doubt growers will be cover cropping with mallow any time soon, the point here is about taking the time to observe and recognize the unique systems that occur in each vineyard. #viticulture #biodiversity #systemicapproach #resilience

Duane and Dina Barker, owners of Lava Terrace Cellars in Bend, Oregon, are embracing organic farming to enhance soil health and tackle challenges of high desert viticulture. Since planting in 2012, they’ve faced frost, erosion, pests, and extreme weather. In 2020, they shifted to organic practices, using compost, cover crops, and livestock for natural pest and weed control. Despite challenges like wildfires, hail, and pests, the Barkers adapted with new tools like Harvest Harmonics chips and soil inoculums, which boosted vine health and crop yields. They also grow hardy grape varieties, like Marechal Foch and La Crescent, that thrive in their volcanic soil.
