"You can't have empowered product teams at large organisations. It just doesn't work" Nonsense. Most of the time it doesn't work because the strategy and focus is terrible, so teams don't have the context to make good decisions. A key role for Snr Leaders (product or otherwise) is to be thinking a few years out and constantly and consistantly communicating the strategic context so that product teams can have confidence in the decisions they are making.

There are no "good product managers" or "bad product managers" There are plenty of product managers performing well, and plenty performing less well. There are many who don't even know the difference. But, this is fundamentally a leadership problem Either.. 🫠 underperformance is expected within the system (e.g. juggling tickets is exactly what they're expected to do, and no more) Or 🫠 underperformance is not expected but is also unmanaged (no feedback, setting of expectations or any degree of training or coaching) "Good" product managers don't grow on trees. They need to be nurtured, and product leadership that can't or won't do this should probably be replaced.

Mindset Matters in Product Management The right mindset can be just as crucial as any tool or technology. As a Product Manager at Aetna, A CVS Company, I've learned that embracing a growth mindset is key to navigating the complexities and challenges we face every day. Is it easy to maintain this mindset? Absolutely not. Why is a growth mindset essential in our field? It encourages us to see setbacks as opportunities for learning, pushes us to constantly seek feedback, and inspires innovation by promoting risk-taking in a controlled, thoughtful way. This approach has helped me not go off the deep end and realign me to what matters most—delivering products that truly meet our users' needs and exceed their expectations. To all the Product Managers out there: Continue to cultivate curiosity, embrace challenges, and always be ready to learn.
