Lessons…                                                                               …From History Lessons learned or the same old mistakes? How many times have we heard that hackneyed empty phrase ‘lessons have been learned so that it will never happen again’. Well ‘it’ does happen again time after time, without any consequence for those who should be held to account, often promoted. The D Day 80 commemorations 1944 – 2024 took place on Thursday 6 June. Closer to home the Chelsea Pensioners were out in style for their Founders Day Parade. We should always remember them and their sacrifice (talk is cheap, actions count). My son is named after his uncle who joined the war effort as a young man to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. After 9 months of training he went on active service and was shot down in a plane, dying 2 days later. He was 19 years old. I wonder whether he would think, looking at the world today, the sacrifice he made with his life was worth it. Characteristics of our armed forces are honourable service, stewardship of the profession, military expertise, esprit de corps and trust. What a better world we would live in if these applied across the board to institutions, organisations and political circles. Integrity matters and those that hold power should be invested in it. We seem to live in a quagmire of ‘my truth (or narrative), your truth (or narrative)’ versus ‘the actual/factual truth (the reality)’. We have the right to expect better, call out the bad, bring in the good. As a veteran, September 11 holds a profound significance for me, as it does for many of us. On this day, we remember the lives lost, the families forever changed and the countless heroes who stepped forward without hesitation. Our armed forces, first responders and those willing to sacrifice their lives exemplify the very best of what it means to be American. This day is not just a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded but a testament to the strength, resilience and unity of our nation. In an election year, it's easy to focus on our differences, to get caught up in the heated debates and the division that seems to follow. But September 11 reminds us of a fundamental truth: we are united in so many ways. Our shared values – especially those of freedom and security – are safeguarded by the brave men and women who serve our country, both at home and abroad. Let's take a moment today to pause, reflect and honor those who have given so much. And let us remember the importance of coming together, of standing united and of showing gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy. Today, and every day, we owe a debt of thanks to those who protect and serve, ensuring that our nation remains strong and free. "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself...." Roosevelt in this famous radio address during the Great Depression was correct in very profound ways about the impact of fear on our thinking and the way we act. Fearful people do things that are out of character because fear kick starts our fight for survival mode in which anything is justified and we do and say things we later regret. Fearful people are susceptible to conspiracy theories and unmoore people from the true facts of a situation. There is ample to be concerned about, but not fearful. In the US we can and should take comfort that our economy is huge and thriving and our constitutional democracy is among the oldest, largest and soundest of any government in history. Our military is so powerful we do not need to shout and to make threats. Our alliances are far reaching and stand on a bedrock of shared democratic values. So yes, fear is our primary weakness that some would try to exploit; but the good news is that whether we are fearful or not is entirely in our own hands.
