Last weekend, I went to Gangtok for a Teacher Training Workshop. It started raining as soon as I reached Baghdogra. We quickly began our uphill journey, but trouble followed. As we crossed the Teesta River, the driver got news of landslides ahead. We had no choice but to take a detour through Kalimpong.
From there, the real challenge began. The rain didn’t stop. The roads were narrow and winding, barely enough for one car. But the driver handled it well. We even went off-roading for two hours! Though the views were stunning, the journey was intense.
We made several stops along the way in small wooden shacks to take a break from the exhausting journey. What was supposed to be a four-hour drive stretched into 11 long hours. Was I tormented? Surprisingly, no! And the reason? Our driver, Bishop. His name was as unique as his spirit.
Throughout the rain-soaked detours and bumpy roads, Bishop remained calm and cheerful. He sang, hummed, and even helped other drivers along the way. His positivity was infectious. What could have been a gruelling ordeal turned into a pleasant adventure.
It made me think—when you're with the right people, everything just feels easier. Even when things get tough, the bad doesn’t seem so bad. There’s something about being around positive energy that can shift your whole perspective. It’s like, in the hardest moments, a good attitude from those around you makes all the difference. Maybe it's not just about what we go through, but who we go through it with.
