https://lnkd.in/dN_TT4k On Earth day, it's always great to acknowledge some of the awesome mysteries & treasurers that the Earth has provided us with.
119 years ago on this day Pierre and Marie Curie announced they had isolated one gram of radium — the first ever sample of this radioactive element naturally found in uranium and in thorium. The Curies were experimenting with pitchblende, a common uranium-rich mineral ore. After extracting refined uranium from the mineral, they found that the remaining materials were still radioactive. To find out what it was, Marie Curie dissolved, filtered and repeatedly crystallized several tonnes of pitchblende between 1899 and 1902. This process left behind around 1 milligram of what turned out to be radium. In 1911, the Curies shared The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of radium. Radium was once thought to have curative properties and was used as an additive in everyday products, but it was soon found to be too radioactive for daily use. Today, it is a useful tool for treating certain types of bone cancer and is also a source of radiation sometimes used for industrial radiography, which is a technique used to test the quality of products and production processes in industry.
