Great short read about a true culture of innovation. Clarity in innovation is fairly rare & usually more in-line with consumer products like Apple or Nike. Here, they have a clear vision of what they aspire to be that is supported by a great hardware product dev approach of "fail fast, fail small", which means extensive learnings at a component level. I like this quote the best: "We’re willing to take big swings at things that we think are going to have big payoffs." #innovation #vision #leadership https://lnkd.in/eci_ii87

An important message here, as always, from Steve Blank. It is shocking to reflect back and realize that some of the most disruptive innovations in the world today were often the brain-child of a leader who was spurned inside their own organization! Case in point: Edwin Land, CEO of Polaroid. Amazing, and worth the few minutes to read! Then reflect and be mindful of the message as you progress on your journey to innovate and disrupt!

If we all came from the same background with the same experience, we’d miss so many innovative solutions. The best ideas come from different perspectives. We need more voices, more backgrounds, more visions. Someone who thinks like a pilot. Someone who designs like an artist. Someone who dreams like a kid. Someone who calculates like an engineer. Break boundaries. Challenge norms. Reinvent flight. We need every kind of thinker in the room. That’s how we reach new heights. >>Follow the Women's Aerospace Network #aerospaceInnovation #STEM #spaceIndustry

Yesterday, Odysseus (launched by SpaceX) became the 1st private spacecraft to land on the moon. The 1st US spacecraft to do so since Apollo 17. Over 50 years ago. The 1950s kickstarted an era of inventions and discoveries. Soon, kids were watching The Jetsons (Assuming George was born in 2022, the age of floating cities should be on our horizon). Young professionals were sure they’d be riding hoverboards to work. But alas, it’s 2024, and there are no floating cities or hoverboards in sight (those electric wheeled things don’t count). So, where did the science go? Hint: Inventions start with capital. In this week's "Science Fair" (https://lnkd.in/d_XzNmdP), we dig into a once industry titan with a strategy described as “no inventions; no innovations”, the frenzy of discoveries in 1960s, the scientific brain drain of today, VC’s take on science, and more. Subscribe to "Science Fair" and follow Skeleton Key for more!

Space hardware, space systems and space operations experienced expert. NASA, Sea Launch, FCC, FAA, Blue Origin, Boeing, AXIOM
Hi Farooq - Part 1 of 2 Having traveled across the long trajectory from old space - Apollo - NASA - Sea Launch (and assorted startups) into ‘new’ space, I’ve had the privilege of having worked in space hardware and space policy throughout that long arc making observations along the way. In philosophy and engineering it’s easy and lazy to define things by what they’re not. Virtually every startup and visionary newco jumps into the field whether it’s launchers, spacecraft, human flight, debris ‘management’, ISAM, space weapons, space economy, lunar habitation, mining, suits, vehicles with the banners ‘new paradigm’, ‘visionary, futurist leadership’ ‘groundbreaking technology’, and especially ‘exploiting (not exploring) get-rich opportunities in space. The general idea is that every one of these enterprises, large and small, startup and behemoth contractor are trying to sell the idea that they're offering something new under the sun while trying to convince VCs, equity and institutional investors that there's a sound economic model under the haystack. t'ain't so, at least not yet. The article talks about the cash flow problem as though there are legitimate roles for contortions about rapid ROI and exit strategy, again not yet.
“In 2021, the space industry – along with nearly every industry – was a red-hot market. We faced significant pressure to scale and capital was available to support it,” O’Hanley wrote. The company had originally planned to be a lean organization, “but to remain competitive we built a large organization capable of producing rockets at a high rate while we continued to tackle the challenges associated with launch vehicle development.” - Harry O'Hanley, ABL Space Systems Really frank and insightful remarks which capture the challenge of any start-up, space or not: delivering a product to market without running out of cash! Sounds simple but most struggle to manage it. https://lnkd.in/eW62wb6N

STRETCHING GOALS, exemplified by ambitious projects like NASA's moon landing and Google's development of Chrome, can propel organizations to extraordinary achievements. These goals are challenging OKRs that push teams beyond their comfort zones, proven to enhance motivation, productivity, and engagement. Google categorizes OKRs into 'stretch objectives' and 'committed objectives', with stretch goals being more visionary and accepting a higher rate of failure. While committed objectives focus on essential metrics and expect full achievement, stretch goals aim for transformative outcomes but are met less frequently. Despite the risks, these goals can lead to significant advancements; for instance, Chrome's initial stretch goal of 20 million weekly users by 2008 wasn't met until 2009, but the challenge spurred continuous development, eventually leading to over a billion users in 2018. Implementing stretch goals can be a game-changer for organizations with the right focus, alignment, tracking systems, and financial resilience to withstand potential failures. #StretchGoals #Innovation #OrganizationalGrowth #OKRs
