The "Aha!" moment in hiring. Most businesses know: - What they do - What they want to achieve - How they plan to execute But when it comes to hiring, they're clueless. Why do I feel this way? It's because they focus on: - Job profile - Skills - Experience If you focus on hiring a person who is a culture fit for your company, you'll get better results. That's the key to hiring top talent. Skills and experience can be developed but their mindset and attitude cannot. The next time you're hiring, ask yourself: - Do they fit into your company culture? - Are they a "team-player"? - Do they have a willingness to learn? If the answer to all three is "yes", then you've found your perfect candidate.

How does internal hiring actually HAPPEN anyway?? I mean... it's recruiting related so of course "it depends" (sorry) Once again there is no universal solution to this, and companies can structure their internal mobility / external hiring processes in whatever way gets the desired result. MOST companies do one of the following: - internal only (this absolutely makes sense for certain roles and/or certain situations) - internal only for X time, then open to all - internal and external concurrently Either of these options are FINE. I always sanity check with my hiring teams if they have anyone internal in mind, or how their existing team will feel about adding a new person (especially for a senior or higher level role - who's on the bench?). Also, "promotions" rarely are tied to "headcount" - the person simply moves up a level or band, and gets a raise + more responsibility. We don't create new reqs for that, usually. I do NOT believe in gatekeeping opportunity, therefore I will NEVER agree with the stupid idea that internal applicants should be blocked after a finite period of time. Internal talent can come from anywhere at any time - and in larger companies those people are total strangers too, just like externals. Also, going the internal route is not ALWAYS the best solution - next week I'll share some funny (well now, at least) cautionary tales of internal mobility gone wrong. Hiring decisions usually happen one of two ways - - Team interviews several folks and picks "the best" (hopefully based on clear data from the interview process not a gut feeling or "hire a friend") - Team interviews and hires the first person who passes the interview Neither is inherently good or bad - it just depends on how the company chooses to operate. Don't shy away from asking your recruiter how all this stuff works. Here's a video of me bitching about this for about 15 min or so.
