Given that we're in the 'Decade of Ecosystem Restoration' it's clearer than ever that practitioners should be publishing their work. This includes learnings, data, success stories etc. Why? Because research on it's own has limitations, and it's at the coal-face of implementation where meaningful changes are made. What are the next steps for implementing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in England? The Westminster Forum Projects' online conference on 13 January aims to answer just that.     Focusing on BNG’s implementation, the conference will include discussions on its progress since February 2024 while preparing for BNG’s extension to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) in November of this year. The conference will be an opportunity to reflect on last year’s progress while being mindful of the next steps as the Government looks to meet its 30by30 nature target. To remind us of the driving purpose behind our BNG regime is our Chief Ecology Officer, Emma Toovey. As keynote speaker, Emma will discuss why quality habitat creation and enhancement outcomes matter in terms of its delivery and what outcomes should be delivered to make it a success. Expect to hear what quality BNG looks like in terms of good science, management and governance and why we should care about making sure BNG is delivered well and with integrity. Too good to miss? 🌿 5 Days of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) 🌿 This week, I had the privilege of running an intensive 5-day training course on Biodiversity Net Gain with the incredibly enthusiastic ecology team at Amey. The course covered everything from UKHab classifications, BNG principles and calculations, and Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans to crafting impactful reports. The team was great to teach. From diving deep into metrics to debating the finer points of biodiversity enhancements, their passion for making a tangible difference in our projects was evident every step of the way. Highlights of the week included: Engaging discussions around habitat creation and innovative mitigation strategies. A shared love of document formatting, creating precise tables, and writing crystal-clear executive summaries. Watching the group grow in confidence with every session, taking on complex concepts and turning them into practical solutions. It’s safe to say we all learned something new – myself included. This group didn’t just absorb knowledge; they questioned, challenged, and ultimately strengthened their understanding of BNG, making the training all the more rewarding. As we move forward, I’m confident that this team will play a critical role in embedding biodiversity enhancements into our work, delivering meaningful outcomes for nature, and setting high standards for ecological reporting. A huge thank you to everyone involved for your commitment, questions and, of course, your document formatting finesse! Our survey of CIEEM members, featured in The ENDS Report, highlighted key opportunities to strengthen BNG 🌿 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/ekW7ma5q The results of our recent survey with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), led by Justin Byrne, MRes PhD MCIEEM and supported by Ellesse Janda, PhD from the University of Edinburgh, offer critical insights into biodiversity net gain (BNG) implementation in the UK. The early findings reveal opportunities to improve access to data, expand training, and address the skills gap among ecologists. These challenges also highlight the growing potential for innovative tools and approaches to empower ecologists and achieve impactful biodiversity outcomes. We’re pleased to see these findings featured in The ENDS Report, one of the UK’s leading environmental publications. The article explores the challenges and the potential for innovative solutions, like AiDASH’s BNGAI™ platform, to support ecologists and improve biodiversity outcomes.
