~50% of Harvard Business School students want to be entrepreneurs. My advice to them: Find an incredible customer to build with early on. 🕺 For Momentum Commerce that customer is Dan Parker @ Thrasio. Dan and I had a blast collaborating on a lecture at HBS today. With some help from our unofficial TA (Rujan Ahmed), we walked the MBA students through five key takeaways: 1. Over the next five years, many consumer products companies will either win or die based on their ability to sell and market on Amazon and similar marketplaces. 2. In consumer products if you don’t have an Amazon strategy, you don’t have a strategy. 3. Selling Third-Party “3P” is often preferable to selling wholesale due to price control and retail margins. 4. Amazon data is gold. Consumer brands and investors are increasingly data-mining on Amazon to inform strategic planning, M&A, and new product development. 5. The key to driving growth on Amazon comes from blending retail, advertising, and market intelligence data sets together to inform decisions across pricing, advertising, and forecasting. Big thanks to Ben Kirshner & Jake Cook and to all of the insanely smart students who had amazing perspectives and questions! 🕺 🕺
Such a fun career moment for me! I'm sure the students turned over every leaf discussing the case study. More edutainment content pls 🙏
"If you dont have an Amazon strategy, you dont have a strategy" - GOLD!
But do they really become one?
🕺🕺

1yJohn T. Shea all points are relevant - especially points (2) and (4). If I may add (6) — understand consumer return behavior.
