The shame of America during World War II was Japanese internment camps. Below is a (deliberately) stark photograph from Manzanar camp in eastern California. There's some incredible scenery in Eastern California on US395. The Sierra Nevadas; 4000-year-old bristlecone pine trees; Death Valley an hour away; clean, pristine lakes. But Manzanar is different. It's poignant. It's stark. It brings things to life that you think would never happen in America. And by remembering it and acting intentionally, you hope it never happens again. A couple of weeks ago, there was a commemorative baseball game played in Manzanar. The attendees at the weekend games said it was about a reclamation of space, community and power. The game seems so simple, but what it represents is boundless. Back when barbed wire restricted freedom, Manzanar players found solace on a field that organizers and volunteers have now rebirthed and made their own." Want to visit? Here are 2 lovely options: 1. Fly into Las Vegas, drive to Death Valley, then Lone Pine/Alabama Hills/Bishop/Mammoth Lakes (hitting up Manzanar and bristlecone pines en route) 2. Fly into Los Angeles, drive just the US395 route, and possibly even route through Yosemite on your way back.
