May is recognized as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Over 50 million Americans, adults and youth, suffer from mental illness and have little access to health care professionals, leading to continued emotional and behavioral health needs, and an increasing number of suicides each year. This is where our Crisis Care and Behavioral Health services come in. The average stay is 4.9 years, often involving overmedication and unnecessary restraint. Most are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. Domestic violence and abuse are hugely complex societal problems. At Open Support we are not the entire solution, however we are providing essential services for people in the here and now whose needs are real and urgent – we are only one piece in the puzzle. Men's mental health is a key related issue that must be addressed urgently. This week is International Men's Health Week. Services and funding for men's mental health are critical. At Open Support we do hope that one day our services will not be needed, but we are not there yet. This week is important in acknowledging the many challenges communities face linked to men's health, and the important work many are already doing in this space. #menshealthweek2024 #togetherwearestronger
