Thrive creates Pilot Programs and provides backbone support for our partner agencies in the community. By knitting together the resources of local government, landlords, and tenant advocates, Thrive piloted a comprehensive solution called the Landlord Tenant Partnership. This program makes accepting housing vouchers more profitable, more secure and more efficient for landlords and provides ongoing coaching and support so that families can succeed in new settings. More than 80% of the first 50 families succeeded in their new housing opportunities and more than 100 children benefited from access to safe housing during the pilot phase of the program. As a result of this success, Thrive has scaled up our leadership and formed the Buncombe Rental Assistance Collaborative. Now, Thrive convenes five other critical housing agencies who serve veterans, the unhoused, survivors of domestic violence and the chronically ill. Rather than competing for new housing, we are working together to raise the standards of support for both tenants and landlords across these agencies. Together with our partners we have placed more than 110 households - more than 250 people - into safer housing. Learn more about our work at buff.ly/3w2PVvd and https://buff.ly/3xdUIdN

Nurse, mom, leader, justice warrior. Working to ensure our community has access to housing we can afford, healthcare we need, jobs that pay a living wage, and the justice we all deserve so our community can thrive.
The Renters Council of the California Democratic Party has endorsed our campaign! I am honored to receive this endorsement alongside the support of local housing activists: Glenn Kirby, former Alameda County Planning Commissioner; Soli, Vice Chair of the Berkeley Rent Board; Alfred Twu Berkeley Planning Commissioner; and Paola Laverde, former Chair of the Berkeley Rent Board. We need to develop #housing that is actually affordable for working families and doesn’t fuel the displacement of marginalized communities — or ghettoize them. We need to produce more housing of all kinds: mixed-income housing, #supportive housing, and deeply #affordable housing that help create resilient, #diverse, multigenerational communities. And we need to preserve the affordable housing stock we currently have to protect renters from predatory landlords. In the unincorporated areas, it is essential that County leadership expand tenant protections and ensure existing housing policies are followed to preserve community integrity and keep our neighbors from falling into homelessness. Every Alameda County resident deserves safe, healthy, and affordable housing.

🏠 Today marks National Housing Day, a moment to reflect on the importance of affordable housing and the challenges many families, particularly young ones, are facing across our communities. The lack of affordable housing is not just a statistic, it's a crisis impacting real families. For young parents striving to provide a stable environment for their children, skyrocketing housing costs are a barrier, leaving many in a constant struggle to find adequate and affordable homes. As we commemorate this day, let's raise awareness about the critical need for accessible housing solutions. Every family deserves a safe place to call home, a foundation where dreams are nurtured, and futures are built. Together, we can advocate for more affordable housing options and support initiatives that address this pressing issue. Let's work towards creating communities where every family, regardless of their circumstances, can thrive. 🌟🏡 #NationalHousingDay #AffordableHousing #CommunitySupport

Today, the National Low Income Housing Coalition, National Housing Law Project, and Tenant Union Federation released a comprehensive National Tenants Bill of Rights to shift the balance of power between tenants and landlords, redress long-standing racial and social inequities, and advance housing justice! More than ever, bold action is needed to create clear, strong, and enforceable renter protections at the local, state, and national level. Rents are sky high, eviction filings are up, and homelessness has increased to its highest level on record. The power imbalance between renters and landlords continues to fuel racial and social inequities and put renters at greater risk of housing instability, eviction, harassment, and homelessness. The National Tenants Bill of Rights builds on the success of tenant leaders and advocates nationwide who have won nearly 300 local and state renter protections in the past few years, as well as the historic and effective leadership of national tenant organizations, such as the National Alliance of HUD Tenants. It was written with direct input from tenant leaders and people with lived experience, including NLIHC’s Tenant Collective and Tenant Talk Live participants, and NLIHC’s ERASE and State and Local Tenant Protection working groups. Community Empowerment & Social Impact Consultant: Amplifying change through policy, advocacy, and action.
Tuesday’s death was a tragic loss and entirely preventable. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that it will be the only death we see this winter season. If the Mayor’s administration focused on collaborating with outreach, social service workers, and the communities we serve, instead of criminalizing the survival of those experiencing houselessness and those working to solve it, we likely would not be in this position. It is high time for the city to stop the sweeps, implement rent control, and redistribute funding to those doing the work. If we have millions of dollars to renovate the Bellevedere or to bring a WNBA team to the city, we have the money to invest in single-site supportive housing, to invest in transitional housing, and overall to invest in the health and well-being of our communities directly. It’s time we roll back the anti-camping ordinance and stop the impending anti-camping legislation at the state level. Mayor Greenburg, Deputy Mayor Nicole George, and Chief Gwinnett-Villarreal - let people live and let us do our jobs.

🏗️ Construction starts soon on this new building at Advocates for Children Georgia, which is so very close to my heart, and marks a full circle in my journey. 🏛️ The old building on the Northside of Pittsburgh ignited my passion for community and social justice. There, amid worship and shared meals, I confronted homelessness's harsh realities. Those individuals, weathered by life's trials, have taught me resilience and hope. 🌟 Now, as construction begins on this new project, I'm reminded of the journey that led me here. This building represents not just bricks and mortar, but a beacon of hope for the future. It symbolizes our commitment to addressing pressing social issues, particularly youth homelessness. 👧🏽 Youth homelessness is a complex challenge affecting communities across the country, even rural communities. Despite the picturesque landscapes, many rural youths experience homelessness due to various factors such as poverty, family instability, and lack of affordable housing options. These challenges often go unnoticed, overshadowed by the idyllic image of rural life. I remain hopeful for a future where we can break this cycle of despair. By recognizing the specific needs of rural youth and investing in tailored solutions, we can pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. Every young person deserves a chance to thrive, regardless of their zip code. Let's work together to shine a spotlight on rural youth homelessness and create lasting change in our communities. #RuralYouthHomelessness #BrighterTomorrow #CommunitySupport

Resident Services is the game changer in affordable housing.
Personal, relationship-based services can transform people's lives. We see it at Mercy Housing every day. I enjoyed catching up with GlobeSt.com about the work we do to build thriving communities, and the way our services team helped a resident take control of his health. Great to hear from Joe Thompson at Mercy Housing Northwest and Marquan Jackson at Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing as well. #affordablehousing #peoplehelpingpeople https://lnkd.in/g8tkn77t

Trauma-informed #housing is a promising approach that aims to redress structural harms and improve the well-being of residents by centering their lived experiences and empowering them in decisions that affect their homes. Check out our new brief exploring the need for trauma-informed approaches and a framework for #affordablehousing designed by POAH Communities, a nonprofit developer. The researchers find that investing in the empowerment and inclusion of residents in the design and management of their homes Anna Morgan Alexa Kort: ✅ acknowledges and works to redress the harms of generations of exclusion and trauma related to housing systems; ✅ creates safer, more accessible housing that reflects residents’ needs and lived experiences, helps to prevent more harm, supports resilience through ongoing stressors and trauma, and sparks joy and pride; ✅ builds stronger relationships and trust between staff and residents and improves resident engagement and leadership; and ✅ aims to improve resident well-being, housing stability, and economic security https://lnkd.in/d6FEDRi5

It’s no secret that there’s an affordable housing shortage, and one of the major issues is that it can take years to get approval for new buildings. In the meantime, people are evicted and the number of people experiencing homelessness continues to rise. DignityMoves is a new startup that’s trying to solve one piece of the problem: Building interim shelters in California quickly and affordably. These well-designed tiny houses also include support services and access to computers for residents. It's not a wholesale solution: Much more permanent housing is needed. But these communities are now home to dozens of people who used to live on the street. Read Adele Peters' story on the work DignityMoves is doing in California—and its plans to expand the model across the country. https://lnkd.in/gXTF9hwF

A Salute to Austin: A City Investing in Its Community We cannot overstate the significance of Austin's remarkable commitment to addressing homelessness. Between 2019 and 2021, the city earmarked an impressive $179 million for assisting those in our community who are most in need. This generous budget allocation speaks volumes about Austin's collective conscience and our shared values. In the face of increased homelessness rates across the U.S., it is heartening to see a city take such a proactive and compassionate stance. This investment is not merely a band-aid solution but a substantial commitment to providing holistic support, from affordable housing initiatives to mental health and addiction services. Yet as we celebrate this achievement, we also look expectantly to the future. We urge Austin to continue to uphold this high standard of community investment, innovating and iterating as necessary to ensure each dollar has the greatest possible impact. In Austin, we have the opportunity to set a national standard for investing in community well-being. So, let's continue to meet this challenge with the same spirit of generosity, innovation, and care that brought us this far.
